If Geary is our 4th best player, we are the worst side ever..
So who is better than Geary right here right now? Name names. And zero points for 'past form'.

Geary is our 4 best player. 2nd best under 25.
And yes - people need to face up to the fact we don't have a very good team.
Can I remind you we finished 3rd last (ahead of two teams show are VFL standard).
People seem to be in serious denial about where we are actually at right here right now.

Certainly not our worst side ever though
Riewoldt, Steven, Armo, Montagna, Dempster, Schnieder, Roberton, Hayes off the top of my head, right now, not including Dal & Mcevoy, both clearly better.. And he'll be over taken by higher skill based players next season in Newnes, Lee, Webster, Ross, Siposs and wright, as well as our likely no.3 pick..
Where was Nick Maxwell ranked at the Pies when they won a flag?
Tom Harley?

Right here right now - Dempster Schneider Armo and Roberton arent better than Geary.
They are all fairly similar I would say and I fear Dempster is nearing the end and Schneids body is not reliable. Roberton definitely has some up side and Armo and Geary are on a similar plane.

As for the 'taken over' part - I really hope you are right! If those 7 new players overtake Geary we are absolutely flying and SW should be given a 2 year extension.

Just about to become a gun player.

With respect to Geary if he becomes captain we will be down the ladder a lot longer than I think.
He at best is a GOP and definatley not a midfielder as some suggest ...
Steven would not like the limelight that comes with the role , so hopefully we unearth a leader in the next couple of seasons..
My tip would be Jack Newnes...
You may be right about Gears being a GOP. But hes still our 4th best player and 2nd best under 30.

Maybe you are right on Jack Newnes but he is really at least 3 years away and Roo cant keep going for 3 years.

(p.s I reckon Gears still has some improvement in him. Needs a bit more strength ).

Con please dont base the B&F when deciding who is our best players. Far to simple. Geary is one the best triers at te club but he is far from our 4th best player even though he has climbed 2 spots after trades this past 2 weeks. Anyway it doesnt matter how good the player is as long as he plays every week, is good in the media, helps sell the club which at this stage may be the most important thing and he is a leader of people. Im unsure we have anyone who fits even 2 of those criteria bar Rooy at the moment.

We're not very good at developing leaders then if that's the case P66...

There is life after Roo and Lenny, are we so scared of change?

I think people are underating Geary immensely as far as he's place in the side goes, but everyone has a right to an opinion.

Lets not be too hasty regarding Gears, who would have thought Danny Frawley was going to be great captain at such an early age.

We had many leaders at the club but because we have bugger all players in the right age bracket we havent got many leaders now. 5 years ago we could have had about 6 captains. Now we have Rooy and then a huge gap. Jack would be a simple choice except he isnt any good in the media but he is certainly the type to sell the club because a that cheeky grin. Pity he cant speak well enough. I certainly dont undersell geary in the side. he is a very good back pocket player who can tage when required.

Agree Jack Steven is very marketable, if not captain material...should be utilised in a promotional way for sure

Agree, hopefully someone stands up inoperable this or next season, or these two mature as player/leader types.

Part of not having leaders could be attributed to our old mate Ross as if you don't devlop players you sure as hell can't develop any next generation leaders.

I'm just trying to make a point that there seems to be some large discrepancies between peoples 'hopes' and 'ideals' for players and their actual week to week performance.

This natural and a large part of our lives as footy fans.

Agree Geary is a top 5 performed player.... Looking at current output in his role

Steven, Joey, Rooy, Fisher better

Hayes, Armitage are probably better players, but in their relative roles Geary is a better defender than they are midfielders... Ranking within the AFL.

Considering our lack of leadership due to disarray, I think that Roo will be named captain and vice captain of the Saints.

I reckon he could be Captain coach in 2015.

Isn't Bluestone Edge engaged to help out with improving our leadership? If this is the case can anyone see a return to co-captaincy or even rotating captaincy. I really thought rotating captaincy worked well for the last group of young guys coming through the ranks.

At the very least I can see Roo and Geary Co-captaining and then if Roo is still going strong in 2015 rotate through another candidate to co-captain with Roo again. You wont get a better mentor and what better way to get the most out of Roo's influence in the twilight of his career.

At this rate it might be:

Lendog - Coach 2015
Roo - Skipper through to about 2019

Plugger you have to admit - Geary isnt 'far from our 4th best player'.

Who are all these guys supposedly way out ahead of him?

I can only see of 3 obvious ones.

Despite the association with less salient types I think giving Armo some responsibility couldn't hurt. Perhaps vice captain under Roo.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Carn pluggs. Who are all these players waaaay better than Gears?

And you cant use the two ps - 'potential' or 'past'. Name names and provide evidence.

With all these awesome players we supposedly have it must be all the coaches fault we finished 3rd last.

Easy shooting things down but never once heard you back your own thoughts.

Not sure if Geary is the one, but I wouldn't discount him. We need someone young that will rise to the challenge.
I think the choice will become obvious by the end of 2014.

Roo joey jack ? Yep.
Armo ? Maybe
Dempster ? Now too slow. Done. Toast.
Armo ? Same as geary.
Roberton- geary better but Dylan has some upside yes.
Lenny = too slow . Toast.
All the others are pure fantasy hope and potential.
None of them are better than Jarryn.
I dare you to tell Jarryn that Sipposs, Ross, Lee , Webster and Wright are better players than him.
He would say ' can they get a kick first ?'

Ok really i give up
geary is no good
We have a dozen players miles better than jarryn
Sure none of them can get a kick or ever actually play but trust me they are great players.
Sure the history says third last but really we finished top 6 in fantasy land because we have so many players who are good in theory but who never actually touch the ball.
