Delaney was traded from North Melbourne for pick 77 on Tuesday morning and said he was encouraged by the talks he had had with St Kilda officials about holding down a key defensive position.

“They were very clear and open and honest about where the club was at and where they saw me so that was probably the biggest thing for me when I spoke to them,” Delaney said shortly after the trade was confirmed.

“They told me where they saw me playing. You have to play your role each week to keep your spot but that was the most exciting thing for me and made me feel like they actually wanted me at the club.”

Delaney said he realised late in the year that opportunities for a key defensive post would be hard to come by at North Melbourne and that he wanted to make the move while other AFL clubs would still hold him in some regard

it's a spot on the list. and it made trading 59 to hawthorn a no-brainer, given we wouldn't be using it. but i'm all for it.

A friend of mine who works at NM said this "Can play. Big body with good athletic ability. Super strong, can jump, had a mark of the year nomination this season. Just wasn't consistent enough here and had players like Grima and Thompson ahead of him. Awesome bloke too"
