I thought I said top 10 not win, big difference...

The only risk is that our midfielders wont know who is going to win the hitout.
It was so easy playing to a ruckman who couldn't ruck.

Maybe some our tactics might work now.

Mac is a champion bloke and I wish him all the best and every success at the hawks.
I agree with the trade though. Mac often struggled for quality hit outs, he was good around the ground but I think by the time we challenge again te development of Hickey and possibly others we should be fine with our ruck stocks. 3 years time we will have some good 21-25 year olds that can hopefully bring us some joy!

How'd his fragile body go against the biggest ruckmen in the game today? Did he crumble and keel over or did he do his job?

Hit outs

The only stat taken that doesn't have a positive correlation with game outcomes?! Possibly the most overrated stat in the game, it's nice to win them... Not essential... BTW, didn't he average 22 a game... At 24yo

Aaron Samdilands proves that point, to a lesser degree Peter Street and Rob Warnock

He did what is the essential stat for a Ruckman .... He took contested marks

Farcical trade

I'm not a fan of this trade. No disrespect to Savage, who I hope can prove me wrong, but I get the impression he's a Dean Polo type; a few good games otherwise standard.

Whereas whatever you think of Ben's ruckwork, he was one of the few players on our list in that mid-age group, a member of the leadership group and a future Saints (make that Hawks now) captain, and a solid grounded citizen. At a time when our list could really do with leaders and sensible people, we trade one of our best of both. Never mind, we kept the joker that thought it would be a wheeze to set fire to a dwarf.

That draft pick we also picked up will have to snare us someone fantastic to make up for Ben's loss, I suppose when you think about it, Savage is the Steak Knives in this deal. I hope so, because I get a feeling history is going to show Ben McEvoy in Hawthorn colours and covered in glory and once again we'll kick ourselves.

Never mind though, could easily be wrong. I suppose it's done now so it doesn't really matter what we think.

Agree with this trade. Ben is not the best tap ruckman going around. Check out some of the stats on taps to advantage. There is your answer.....

Big agree from me. Big Mac has no upside IMO and has never reached great heights.
Hickey will hopefully shine given the chance like Sydney game, his upside is huge.
Savage I have never watched closely so would only be judging him on numbers.
And the extra pick leaves us in a good position

So

Pick 9 with 6 years development... 90 games... And in the leadership group
For
Pick 17 and a VFL sweetener

Bit Like

Pick 24 and two years development
For
Pick 37

Pick 13 with 3 years development
For
Pick 43

See the pattern..... Either bad recruiters or bad traders

First thankyou to Ben for his efforts at St Kilda.
A highlight was always his kicking for goal!
Always a blow to have such a great guy leave the fold. It's desperation time @ St.Kilda @ the moment and the club is determined to push itself back into the big time. I understand the position the club is in and don't criticise it for trying to rebuild our team. Losing/ trading someone like Ben has more to do with our overall situation than Ben's value.
Have to get used to not seeing a player I really respected as atop person. Hope he thrives @ hawkland.

Hope Shane thrives with new opportunities as well and that he can fill a void in our Sainter hearts.

GO SAINTS!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

The hysteria in the media and social-media about the Saints trading of Ben McEvoy to Hawthorn for Shane Savage and pick 17 is absolutely typical of the uneducated masses who feel compelled to make comment.

People seem to think McEvoy's a star just because a fool in BT lauded him as 'Big Boy' every time he went near the football.

McEvoy won just 36.8% of his ruck contests this past season - the second-worst percentage of the top 22 AFL players to be involved in a ruck contest. He is as slow as treacle and has no timing in his limited leap. He does, however, have good endurance, marking and kicking skills. As a ruck-man, though, he will be absolutely no loss to St Kilda.

Great trading from The Pelican & team!

Bartel takes contested marks, Wingard takes contested marks, but I don't think that they will be used as 1st ruck

Street and Warnock get or got hit outs. Not sure they get or got near the ball after that.

So we also swap Buddy compo (currently pick 18) for our 2nd round selection, currently 21

Trade is:
Haw - McEvoy & 21
Saints - Savage, 17 & 18

Comparisons between Polo and Savage are few and far between. Savage has demonstrated good speed and a thumping kick where as Polo was more of a negating player. Both clubs identified a need and both clubs got a good result. In all fairness i to like Ben but unfortunately being that big and nice does not always cut it. Yes great person but performances have probably drifted towards the minus side and his stats for this season have reflected that. Good luck to the lad.

Con its 3 spots. At that point in the draft its about your recruitment team. Obviously its a fraction better but its no real big deal especially as we arent getting 17 anyway. That pick is at least 18 and the other pick could be between 19 and 21.

Spot on, picks 18 and 19. GWS have a mid first round selection (pick 9) and the Daisy compo will be thrown in at pick 11. Also note Dons and Crows aren't included in the first two rounds.
