Re: McEvoy
I think he a reasonable player.
Stephenson is a 30yo mature ruck, better than Maric at actual ruckwork, but is not great around the ground.
Midfielders are more important than ruckmen at stoppages, whilst a good Ruckman is a bonus... Would take a bloke who can take a few contested grabs and get a kick any day..... Over a guy who can tap a ball to a Contest

Re: McEvoy
Actually,
I reckon a Key Fwd is more of a priority going fwd ATM
Just behind Key defenders an midfielders...
In fact, Ruckmen are probably the least concerning....
Key back, outside mid, key back, inside mid, outside mid, small fwd, outside mid, medium fwd....... Would be the order of my priorities
Under 26
Key backs.... 0.... Need 3
Medium Backs.... 5 ..... Need 3
Small Backs.... 3 ...... Need 3
Inside mids.... 4 ...... Need 6
Outside mids... 2 ..... Need 6
Small fwds..... 2 ...... Need 3
Medium Fwds ... 3 ..... Need 3
Key fwds...... 1 ......., Need 3
Ruckman ...... 4. ...... Need 4

Re: McEvoy
Which also begs the question
Roberton 194 mid back
Simpkin 191 mid back
Gwilt 188 mid back
Webster 188 mid back
Gilbert 194 mid back
Added to our first choice 29yo Dempster 191 a mid back
Which 2 could be released???... We have a surplus in this area
I know we try to dress them up as key pp players, but none are, and get horribly exposed......

Re: McEvoy
Based on that analysis 2 of our medium backs are trade bait.
We'd get nothing for Simpkin and we MUST keep Roberton and Webster.
That leaves 2 of Gilbo Seany D and Gwilt as open to trade .
People will squeal but can I remind them we are 3rd bottom .
We are only slightly better than GWS and Melbourne.
We ain't going real flash. We can't keep cruising . You take Roo out and we are probably bottom.

Re: McEvoy
Surely Gilbert is on the market... Roberton is the same, younger and better...
Not sure what to do with Simpkin.... It's he or Gwilt... Ones better offensively, one defensively?? With a good FB... Perhaps Gwilt to stay
Not sure about Simpkin?!

i reckon you need two tall HBF. trade simpkin. keep roberton, gilbert. that is unless of course theres a great price on gilberts head and we have a buyerBigMart wrote:Surely Gilbert is on the market... Roberton is the same, younger and better...

Re: McEvoy
HBF'S need to be able to run and carry....
This year arguably had 6 tall HBF'S playing in the defense at a time
Gilbert, Fisher, Simpkin, Dempster, Gwilt, Wright (187) Siposs, Webster (188), Dunnell (189), Robertton, Ray (187)

Re: McEvoy
We will get nothing for simpkin anyhow so I think he should be kept out of the discussion .
The simpkin story is whether we keep him or not
The jury is out on him . Some feel he is 2 inches too short.
Personally I like him .
But it's really moot cos we'd get nothing for him.
The harsh reality is we don't need all of gilbo Gwilt and dempster.
Personally I'd trade gilbo and dempster .
I know people will squeal at this ( but there are still people who think we should sign the big kos on for another year so he can 'teach the younger guys stuff '.) so I'm not too concerned about the squeals.

totally agree. gilbert and roberton have demonstrated that they can. simpkin cannot.BigMart wrote:HBF'S need to be able to run and carry....

You were saying;)joffaboy wrote:jonesy wrote:If we use another first rounder on a Ruckman I'll burn Seaford down...
I'll get howled down for this, but I'd put him up at years end and see if we can get a quality mid in exchange. Polarises people BigMac, some say he is excellent, and others see us get annihilated in the ruck every week...

I stand by my statement
Seriously though, happy for the pick but is Savage a quality mid?
Dal Santo is a quality mid, Mitchell is a quality mid, Savage? Useful but quality?
Time will tell.
Still i like having picks 3, 17, and 21, that has been an excellent result.
Lance or James??

Good ruckmen don't just tap to contests though. Good ruckmen tap to their mids advantage.
Same as good mids kick to a forward's advantage, average ones kick to a forward contest.
That's been the problem with our rucks - we've been so uncompetitive that opposition ruckmen have been allowed to tap to their mids advantage, rather than just tapping to a contest.

Hawthorn apparently...mightysainters wrote:He is a RUCKMAN who can't ruck! Nothing is wrong with some supporters, some are just realists. Magnificent trade.... for Hawthorn. Happy enough with a player and pick 17, just not happy with Savage. He is no better than what we already have.

Re: McEvoy
And so what? We need a number of midfielders. Maybe you can say that about a ruck man who occupies the only spot in the 22.maverick wrote:And whose that then?borderbarry wrote:Magnificent trade.... for Hawthorn. I'd be very surprsied if Gwilt isn't a 2014 version of Blake, he'll be kept on the list as a back up.
Simpkin offers more going forward IMHO

Re: McEvoy
I think Savage will become a fan favourite. He has a bit of character to him and is quick and aggressive. Don't worry too much about him he will be a handy player.

Too early to call him him a gop.
