Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
It looks to be a good move purely on gains and losses, but I am convened about the lack of ruck depth
I love this club

There is a possibility further picks could be exchanged between the two clubs once Hawthorn's compensation for losing free agent Lance Franklin has been announced.

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
I think this could go down as one of the monumental stuff ups of the StKilda Football club. Ruckmen have their best years between 25-32 as they have developed their body and skill required to Ruck. We have just put in 6 years into this bloke - yes his tap work is ordinary but he is the best contested mark we have and covers the ground well , can go forward and kick goals. We also have in reserve only another speculative ruck in Hickey- unless Longer suddenly becomes a target. We have just done the equivalent of buying a share of $0.50 selling at $3.00, however I think in the next 5 years the share will go to $12.00, and we have used the proceeds to buy another $0.50 cent share.

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
I predict McEvoy will go on to an exceptional career at Hawthorn. Very good footballer and quality person by all accounts.
Not happy about this trade at all. This one could backfire big time.
Good news for Ben though.

Yeah I know but… he is a pick #75 fringe midfielder for a pick #9 ruckmen…True Believer wrote:dragit wrote:My humble apologies to the great Jaxons…
I am in shock to be honest, considering we are so short on the 22 - 25 bracket… and Ben was a top ten pick…
I guess he hasn't come on this year like we had hoped… still plenty of time for him though.
Hickey is not ready to ruck a full season at this level yet IMO, pretty fragile.
Hopefully a Bontempelli type can slip to that pick…
However we also secured Savage, who is, wait for it, 22 !!
I think quality ruckmen are harder to find than mids…
I seem to remember you lambasting me for suggesting we might trade McEvoy a few months ago yeah?
We need to make that pick count in order to make this deal a winner…

...the age has got it right for once...that comment says it all really......the saints are mad.....
IMO Ben is worth around #25, so to get a 1st round pick AND a reasonable player for him, in Savage, is absolutely sensational business by us.
My respect for the knowledge of the Age footy journalists sunk even lower.

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
Are we upset because he was a top 10 draft pick or because of his output?
How many times was he in the best this year?
Why didn't he finish top 10 B&F?
Where would he rate in the top ruckman in the league? Whose ahead of him?
He will have a good career at the Hawks, but he has the players around him and the perfect foil in Hale as well...
His knock for mine is his tapwork and speed...
His strengths are his marking, size, aerobic capacity, leadership and skills
It is speculative, but this is the kind of thing we need to do...
Ask yourself, would we have improved McEvoy, and would he have improved us much/any more than Hickey will?
That's the punt they are taking....

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
To get this club back on track we need to take deals that are over the odds, this is one back in our favour after the Lyon years of backing odds on favs carrying 62.5kg, going up 600m in a field of 18, against black caviar...

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
Don't recall "lambasting" you, but will take your word on that. I am not known for being shy and retiring. ANd I may well have agreed with you on the basis of age and our list profile, but after the second half of the season and seeing Hickey's potential, I am very happy. I think Hickey will outperform Ben within two years, and think Lewis Pierce will be the best of the three of them. I also think Stanley is a better ruckman than Ben, and may make his mark in that role (still remember him jumping all over NicNat in the NAB cup).dragit wrote:Yeah I know but… he is a pick #75 fringe midfielder for a pick #9 ruckmen…

I see this as BOTH clubs taking a "High Risk-High Reward" approach. Time will tell who is the winner !!

Agree, you would think Savage was worth pick in the mid 20's so effectively to the Hawks they swapped pick 17 & pick 28 (pick for Hampson, Blues were interested)....fairly big price....Eastern wrote:I see this as BOTH clubs taking a "High Risk-High Reward" approach. Shane Savage got three Brownlow votes against us in round 20. I'm just trying to think who his opponent was for most of the night.

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
It is disappointing to put 6 years into a bloke to trade him out, BUT his ruckwork was beyond hopeless at times and he is very very slow. Good mark, decent skills, good engine and pretty good leader but in his position, which is Ruckman, he has not been impressive. The modern game is full of athletes (Nick Nat being the best exponant) that are good ruckmen. Lumbering giants are a thing of the past
Pick 17 could be anything. Will we use it or on trade it? Will we now send 21 to GWS to secure Bruce? As has been brought up can we ship it to North for #8 as part of a deal with Dal?
As for Savage, I reckon we have a gem here. He's quick and skillful in the age bracket that we need. Plus he comes to us from the best team over the last 2-3 years. This is a win for sure
All in all, despite the giant overreaction from the peanut gallery that the club is stupid and this is the worst trade of all time I reckon this will be a bigger win for us than the Hawks. Evidenced by as I post this I read that they still want Longer despite picking up the "best ruckman in the game" they still are trying o get another

Re: McEvoy to Hawthorn
I like Macca and didnt want to loose him but now the trade is done, I think it's a bit of a win win he is actually better suited for the hawks and will likely have a medal hanging around his neck come next September.
I think we will draft a stop senior ruck for backup in 2014
Good luck to Macca he probably wanted to leave , if he read half the posts on here!!

Yep f%$# the Roos and that little nut job coach of theirs. Get the deal done and let Delaney walk to the PSD. They can wallow in 1 point losses for another year. Hawks know how to trade- give a little get a little.

Buddy compo pick, as explained to me this morning, is the next pick after the Hawks' first pick which is now in the 30's? Is that the case?maverick wrote:Take that I reckonThe OtherThommo wrote:Dal Santo to Hawthorn for a Buddy compo pick, maybe?maverick wrote:See this article:

Don't think so, Grrrr (bit tough counting the "r"s). I thought the compo picks were allocated against the original draft pick order.

Yes it is.
