Sandy partnership in trouble- Capt abandons ship?

Post: # 1397347Post Enrico_Misso »

Looks like stormy waters.
Marigliani has quit as Sandy captain to (prob) join Port.
Marcus claims that the alignment with StKilda compromises Sandy's ability to win games.

Is this another nail in the Sandy-Saints coffin?

Who cares what this bloke thinks? This may sound brutal but I'm more concerned about the development of St Kilda players than Sandy's ability to win games. I'm sorry, but the tail does not wag the dog.

What hes actually saying is some of the st kilda listed players are s***.
Which is true.
Clearly 'alignment' itself isnt as issue as show by Box HIll wiing the flag in a play off v Geelong.
So the issue isnt the alignment - its just the quality of the St Kilda listed players playing for Sandy. Some of them are very ordinary and sub-VFL standard.

This is due to a combination of:
1. poor recruitment by Saints in last decade
2. Rubbish draft picks from being high on the ladder for a long time
3. See 1

We can turn this around pretty quickly.

It won't be an issue in a couple of years. See how well Sandy goes without a link to an AFL team.

4th Sandy captain in 4 years

From what I can gather it is like two clubs in one.

The Sandy and StK boys mostly train apart.
Then they are expected to combine on match days.
Plus some of the injured/unfit StK boys get looked after with limited game time.
Others are told to work on particular aspects of their game.

All that must make it hard for the Sandy boys who are just focused on winning.

Probably go as well if not better than now. The partnership is stuffed because unlike the Box HILL Sandy really do want to be on their own and im sure we do to. If we had a ground it would be over now. I reckon both clubs will be forced to go together for 2 more years though. It may not be pretty.

How come Box Hill is so successful?
Family culture? Team spirit? Are baysiders more individual in their outlook on life?

Spot on assessment Con..players that didn't deserve a game were playing seniors...Lever, Staley this year...last year Winmar, Shenton and at times Crocker

But 2016 should see a parting of the ways...Sandy can then concentrate on winning and adding to the 8 flags won in the last 30 years and St Kilda can do what they feel is necessary to develop their younger players

It will be a win-win situation

Marigliani was at Sandy for 3 years and unfortunately at least half of that time he was out injured...this year Adam Cockie was captain for most of the matches..

The makeup of the competition will be interesting come 2016...with Richmond, Bulldogs and St Kilda all having their own reserves team

To be honest I thought that injuries were a massive problem for Sandringham this year.

Fisher, Gilbert, Gwilt, Ferguson, Markworth, Wright, Milera, Stanley, White , Siposs , Koschitski ( and probably others ) were all affected by injuries that either directly affected Sandringham, or meant that StKilda would steal the best replacement out of the team.

In the final games of the season they were having to scrounge players from the u18's.

I'm not sure what we are suggesting should have been done to help the situation from Sandringham's point of view, play AFL players with injuries?
Yes there were some compromises where players like Dowler were in the reserves, but I'm not sure it was too rampant.

Edit: as pointed out above, Marigliani himself didn't help the situation.

Good. Sounds exactly the way it should be. Once we get our standalone team I couldn't care less about them

it does...along with the draw...saints pull players at short notice...also....the draws should be structered so that where possible vfl teams play before their afl counterparts...otherwise three players don't play anywhere greatly weakening sandy's ability to win....

But plenty are signing on and much earlier than last year

Cook, Cockie, Michialides ( if not drafted) Shikalis ( if Not Drafted) have all now been there 2 or more years and would be able captains

Not good enough saintbrat!

I think we are confusing our cause and effect.
If we had better recruitment and more depth of talent the alignment would be seen to be working.
Ive always been a sandy fan and grew up down the road from tbo so i always liked the alignment.
But hey sandy will be ok on their own and a moorabin saints side is also cool.

So a sandy team without AFL players like Blake, Simpkin, Ledger, Ross, TDL, Milera, Dunnell, Curran, Maister

Or a

StK team without Cockie, Cooke, Marigliani, Shakalis, Dowler, Michaladis, Shephard

Would be better

It's the aligning of the two that is the issue..... And the politics around it

and many from Box Hill were extremely unhappy that Box Hill Did Not wear its home jumper for the grand final but wore a hawthorn jumper
same with Northern Blues_ carlton..

Box Hill were the Mustangs. Hawthorn have completely taken over the club.
