2003 - pass, was a very weak draft, fisher a big win.

2004 - pass, another very weak draft, managed to get a good player in gwilt and serviceable player in mini

2005 - fail, watts trade really hurt us, after that we didn't have much to work with.

2006 - fail badly, could have picked up some gun KPP in this draft. (we did get jones and geary in the rookie draft though)

2007 - pass, very successful draft/trade period for us in 07. Pick 42 goes alright :D

2008 - fail, we missed out on some decent players. Stanley the only one left from the draft.

2009 - no comment needed

2010 - fail, cripps over darling  (curren in the rookie draft though)

2011/12 - too early to call

Sainter for life.

If you want to be any good you need to get 50% of your first rounders correct.
we got 2/10
arguably 0

disgraceful

harden up and face our reality

pathetic decade of recruitment.

we spend all our time worrying about dals feelings or pissing and moaning about the coach or the messiah like babys and ignoring the disgrace we did for the decade since.

Yes 2008, 2009 total disasters. Farren's been serviceable and Rhys may still grow into a very good player, but....after us taking Tom Lynch at 13 in 2008 and our next selection of Rhys at 47 there were :
Ryan Shoenmakers, Luke Shuey, Hayden Ballantyne, David Zharakis, Nick Suban, Dayne Beames, Dan Hannebery (ouch), Luke Shiels, Steven Motlop, Mitch Robinson, Rory Sloane....

We could have had three of them instead of Farren, Tom Lynch and Nick Heyne...... Hindsight I know and who knew back then who would be a star, but our recruiting was terrible in 2008 and 2009. 2005 and 2006 not much better.
If you assess those four years, 05, 06, 08, 09 - from them we should now have a core of perhaps 8 players with 60 - 120 games experience with fully developed bodies between 23 and 26 years old taking over from our senior players - in those four years we selected 23 players and 4 of them remain at the club. That's 1 in 6.

Yep. James Frawley, Jack Riewoldt, Kurt Tippet, Todd Goldstein, Eric Mackenzie, Lyndsay Thomas, Jesse White. Too easy in hindsight though. Bummers, Hawks, Crows and Swines drew blanks with their first rounders that year.

Tim Lynch fail? Why. If he becomes a good player, which I think he is on track to become, is that the recruiters fault or coaches at the club who evaluated him incorrectly.
Regards 2008 do we take into account rookies, Simpkin and Dawson?

You have to count rookies. They are drafted like any other player.

Well if that is the case, then I am of the opinion, the 08 draft was not a disaster.
Potentially four players, that's a pretty good return.
One of the hard parts in evaluating drafts is it can takes year to do it accurately.
I believe it is too early to grade the 010 draft as poor.
We still have, Ledger, Siposs and Curren.
Cripps looks an average player to me.

Yeah Plugger....I know. No offence taken..... I was just looking at the pre-season draft. I'd be interested to know that the average strike rate is across all clubs for players taken in the PSD who get to 50 or 100 games. Couldn't find it by Googling........

Still think we went overs on hickey - essentially 13, 37 and 57 for hickey white and trl
Better hope white comes good and hickey learns afl

Thanks for that Gusto. Missed out TDL taken with pick 47 we received as part of the Hickey trade.

If our recruiters threw a dart at a board (listed with names left) our list would be better

Maybe thats what they did do and they were very unlucky

I think the last two years are very promising. Newnes and Webster look like bargains. Lee should be a very good forward and I think Hickey is going really well. Ross, Wright, Saunders and Murdoch all look more promising than a bulk of our draftees over the years.

The overall isn't as bad as I imagined as we got some talent outside the first round. 2009 was the exception though- that was a stinker. 2010 not a great deal better but at least Simpkin is still here.

Guys like Cripps and Lynch should have been kept but didn't see a future so that was an internal failure.

Firstly, a good Post from st.byron. Thanks for the info.

This drafting business is a bit hit & miss, but if that's your job and the Club is paying good money, then better results are "expected.'

Who at the Club "appoints" the Reruiters? Perhaps those who appoint the Recruiters should be stood against the wall, because we have been consistantly poor over the past 5+ years.

Really we haven't done that badly in the draft.
2009 and 10 absolute shockers though.
We should have two or three guns from those two years by now.
9 and 10 was a real vacuum . I still believe John Peake was a Geelong double agent.

I think our development also needs work.

Agree with you Con recruiters during the last decade should have been shot
Let pelchin and watters do whatever they have to .i don't want to wait 5 years to get back to the top and I suspect neither do they

I once went through all the old published official phantom drafts. And if we simply employed some idiot to draft the players that the press thought we would, we would have come out ahead.
Surprisingly 2003 wasn't that bad, it was a terrible draft, and without being clairvoyant Raph was as good as we could have hoped for.
Watts was a disaster and we payed way over for him even if he hadn't injured himself.
Howard was mental.
We drafted long term rookies, when clearly we were not going to spend a long time developing.
We alienated players who may have been oK ( Gaertner / Lynch / MIles ) and delisted Attard because he was injured.

Ledger is now delisted.
Cripps became homesick for Perth, so we let him go to the Weagles last year.
Average is irrelevant for him now

If Siposs fails next year 2010 is also a write off.
