Re: Ross Lyon
It's not strange when your mates are powerful media voices. Paul Roos and Robert Walls and a few other commentators that Ross worked under have continuously pumped up the legend of Lyon. What would you expect of both Roos and Walls anyway?!! After all, they were absolute geniuses for appointing him, working with him, mentoring him, choosing him for the Saints job etc...etc... All I heard was that he'd done such a wonderful job and then there was the myth about our list.
Sure he did a great job as an apprentice senior coach up against Mark Thompson (who at that stage had already won a flag) and also going up against Mick Malthouse ( who'd already won 2 at WC) but where was the balance? Where were the critical voices in the media? He gets praise and accolades because the spin was first class after he failed with a list that was capable of 19 in a row. The spin was first class after he failed with a list that had a core of players who had already played in 2 prelims.

Re: Ross Lyon
Good point re Clarkson having Lyin covered
IF Freo win the flag IMO there is still the outstanding nagging doubt about Lyon and that us can he oversee the rebuild/regeneration of a list that Malthouse, Sheedy and Clarksin to a lessor extent have done
Match day great coach no doubt.

Re: Ross Lyon
SW has RL covered, I reckon.Good point re Clarkson having Lyin covered
As an inexperienced first year coach, SW had as many wins as RL did in his last year with us!

Exactly.whiskers3614 wrote: Yep, and once Lyon wins one he will be the equal of Tony Jewel!
This myth with coaches having the ability to make a significant difference is ridiculous.
Each AFL side has an AFL coach - so they more or less negate each other, or maybe make 1% difference at best.
SW took over when we were declining and in his first year not only did he stop the decline - we had a percentage of 123% and we also lost a few close games... we could have easily ended up with 15 wins!
So this myth with coaches is busted!
RL is coaching the most talented list once again - so maybe it's fourth time lucky for him.

RL has yet to coach the most outstanding list in the AFL. No way freo have the most talent and we have been told constantly thet players like Eddy and McQualter werent good enough. You cant have it both ways and even at the top end Geelong and the Pies had more AA in the years they beat us.

Re: Ross Lyon
How can you even imagine it was a great move. Freo will be in the Grand Final, it would need a miracle from the depleted Swans to deny Freo.Teflon wrote:Hate him but can he coach
One thing his stint at Freo will tell us for sure:
St Kilda either made a great move by not securing him earlier OR we made one of histories biggest ever c**k ups
I hope it ain't the latter

What do people think Lyon would have achieved if he'd decided to stay at StKilda.
He was a man without any idea's in 2011.

So you're saying not even a flag at.... Fremantle, wouldn't change your mind.

If Freo don't win one under Lyin it will be "great coach , solid result getter but just can't get it done on the biggest day where his game plan falls over against talented opposition with flair"
Pressures on Ross too IMO

What Im saying is winning a flag with Freo proves Ross can get the best out if sides on the up.Spinner wrote:Teflon wrote:Good point re Clarkson having Lyin covered

Does it prove Lyin can take a bottoming out team and build it up to be challengers again??? No
It's really not very hard....

Re: Ross Lyon
You must really rate Puopolo, Anderson, Spangher and Bailey then.plugger66 wrote: RL has yet to coach the most outstanding list in the AFL. .. Guerra has only become a player under the Hawks - he's 32 now!
and Lake was more or less written off by everyone, except the Hawks.
Freo has a stronger list than the Hawks!
SW with his first year matched RL's last year .. and we had a percentage of 123%.. plus we could have won another 3 close games.
No mean feat.
Re: Ross Lyon
His stars seem to be really aligning this year. Beating Geelong was the key.
Now we've got the Cats playing the Hawks and a depleted Sydney playing in W.A.
Its almost like scissors paper rock. Freo can beat Cats can beat Hawthorn can beat Freo.
Then, if Freo win the premiership, its only logical that the late season form found by StKilda actually makes us the strongest team in the contest moving forward.
