ST Kilda chief executive Michael Nettlefold described it as "the elephant in the room" at the club's awards last night.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Both Saints leaders sent powerful messages at the start of the best and fairest function over the players' Mad Monday disgrace.
"I didn't think we could move forward tonight without touching on what happened this week and how we are feeling," Nettlefold said.
"This is not the St Kilda you want and it's not the St Kilda we want. And we intend to do something about it. That's the elephant in the room and it had to be addressed.
"The Saints mean too much to too many. Our captain Nick (Riewoldt) and one of our other great champions Lenny (Hayes) stood up and said that's enough, our legacy has to mean something and it can't be just how many games we've played, this has to be about St Kilda.
"Today all players came to the club and called every single member that sent an email, to apologise. Members were entitled to send their thoughts and I have no doubt there could have been many more. They were entitled to an apology, all St Kilda members were and the broader football community also.
"Is it easy to single out a few players and I know they are both good young men? Yes, it is. Should we all share some responsibility? That's a yes as well.
"For those who didn't send an email, the players filmed an apology video that has now gone to all members and been posted on our website today.
"This was all player driven and should be acknowledged. I'm still recoiling from the emails. Some were brutal, but many, many, undeniably fair."
Nettlefold emphasised the hurt when he told how he phoned a member in the US, only to be told that the fan couldn't discuss it because he was too upset.
Watters said the players' collective reaction to the public shame was the first step to putting the issue behind the club.
"For too long our club has not aspired to be great, on and off the field. It's time to step up or step down," Watters said.
"This is a brutal game and brutal industry. It tests our stamina, character and belief. It has been a testing week.
"Two days ago was day one of our move forward. This club is in your (players') hands."
The mood of the night lifted when Nick Dal Santo, Riewoldt and Leigh Montagna led the standing ovation tributes to retiring greats Jason Blake, Justin Koschitzke and Stevie Milne.
Milne reinforced Jack Steven's leadership credentials when he summoned the young midfielder to the stage to anoint him as his replacement as leader of the Saints' theme song.
Steven later received his own standing ovation when crowned as the best and fairest winner, ahead of Riewoldt and Montagna.
