Sorry, but on what basis do you come up with this drivel? On what grounds does the appointment of a coach entitle a club to a priority pick? What numerical value is assigned to this in the AFL's secret formula for priority picks? And exactly how many more free hits at the top 5 picks is Melbourne entitled to ??

The AFL are appointing this coach, not Melbourne, and this coach will dictate to the AFL the terms in which he'll join... If Roos' appointment hinges on a PP, take it to the bank, they'll get it... And theres every chance that's one of his many provisos... first being $$$$'s...

I think that's been in for a couple of years since they dropped the priority to a discretionary one. Pretty sure they don't give one and two any more at all. They get number 1 pick and a second pick at the end of the first round instead. It is designed to stop Melbourne tanking anymore.

It's important to the AFL that there are still 18 clubs. It's equally important to the other 17 clubs who aren't Melbourne, because everyone gets a cut of the TV rights money. None of the other clubs will object if and when this happens because they know what side their bread is buttered on.

The clubs aren't really independent, they're all just arms of the AFL. Supporters are the only ones who really see a distinction between them.
