From all the other stuff you hear about him, I could have suspicions about how he was such a powerful player at the start of his career, but they would only be baseless suspicions.
But it still concerns me that his best season was his first season.

Im not sure that is true. This season has been his best by a street, but every season since his first he has kicked more goals (than his first), had more possessions by a fair way etc.

Re: Dustin Martin
Pick 3 in a heartbeat. A ready made gun midfielder who is the right age. However, I think he'd be mad to leave Richmond now and its unlikely.Moorabbin Man wrote:Buckets wrote:Haha not sure JB!
What would we have to give up for him though is the question? Dal and a late pick?

Re: Dustin Martin
I call it a $650K mistake, a mistake in those years of recruiting, now we are trying to get a few 22 year olds to make up for our poor recruiting a few years ago.
Re: Dustin Martin
He's probably learnt to position himself better to receive uncontested possessions. But he had 195 contested possessions in his first year, only 155 this year.ljpoyz wrote:Im not sure that is true. He kicked 33 goals in 2011.
I just get nervous at the thought of big trades. Most of the big trades StKilda made last time we were rebuilding had turned sour by the time the team was challenging.
I just feel we need to be patient and draft well, then fill the holes at the right time.
Re: Dustin Martin
We weren't really into 22 year olds last time around. He kicked a lot of goals in his second season, true. But he is still kicking a goal a game, gets it 24.4 times a match and has 8 contested possessions a game. I think he has worked out where to run, like you said. Very good player.

Re: Dustin Martin
Melbourne would have little cap room, with the recruitment of Dawes and Mitch Clark over the last 2 years, and they still need to sign Frawley, Howe, Sylvia and Watts to long term lucrative deals. Not sure they can handle him either.Buckets wrote:Well if he goes into the PSD we would need him to drop past both the Giants and Dees, would find it hard to see either of those teams letting him go.
GWS as much as they would love him would be silly to recruit him when that is the last type of player they should get.
I reckon a 2nd rounder with Dal might get it done with the threat of PSD.

Re: Dustin Martin
Martin is a gun
Give him 2 x 700 & 2 x 800.
Money better spent development wise than if we spent the same coin on BJ.
He certainly fills a midfield gap.
If we get him without giving up pick 3 we have accelerated our development by a year at least.

Re: Dustin Martin
Bj is not a gun midfielder or gun key position player so im glad we didn't give him that sort of coin. Martin on the other hand will be, and to secure his services I would front end his contract like you have stated.maverick wrote:Martin is a gun

Re: Dustin Martin
martins footy is getting better and better. My tigers mates reckon he is about their best player and getting better by the year. I would take his stupid antics and get the deal done. Some rumblings that the GWS boys have some lack of mature sensible influences as it is so not sure he would fit there. GCS don't really need another Ablett and have about 15 gun midfielders as it is so might be a get for us. Luke Ball him through.

Re: Dustin Martin
If he went to the PSD I don't believe he would fall past Melbourne as they are desperate for Midfielders.
They may be tight on the salary cap but they would let Howe and Watts go if they could secure a player like Martin.

I have a source that claims we may be interested in him but also we may not be interested in him.

I didn't even ask mine, they offered it up.
Probably BS, but I like it all the same.

Get Dusty now I say. He is a gun and is just what we need. I don't care if he's the shittest guy ever I want champions. He hasn't even peaked and he's probably been their best this year. Cotchin dropped away a bit.

Re: Dustin Martin
I would assume that we are interested in every single decent player who might be coming out of contract…
At the very least, we would be looking to drive up the price on players to impact the salary cap of all 17 other clubs.
If Richmond have to pay Martin 550 instead of 450 to stay, then hopefully they are out of the market when some decent free agents become available.

Next year they struggle to keep a Vlastuin or Conca, they don't seem to have a Collingwood or Sydney cap.
