Joey is elite
I never thought in past years that Joey was an elite player, very good but not elite. This year I think he has taken a step up and is now in the elite class. Not only that but I think he should be rewarded next year with the captaincy. Has shown by action on and off field that he deserves the honor and would be up to the challenge. Nick as was shown again today has the heart of a lion but should now have the burden of captaincy removed for his last year or two.
Can I add in this thread that Ledger gave a big middle finger today to those who wouldn't select him previously. Bugger elite disposal, this boy just knows how to get the footy. Loved his goal in the last quarter. I honestly hope we keep him and give him ample opportunity next year. IMHO he shows more than Seb Ross(admittedly one more year in the system) but it seems SW doesn't like what he sees. Maybe today goes towrd changing that. Hopefully a start next week.

Re: Joey is elite
I have always thought he was severely under rated. he doesn't do the flashy things and has always been consistent so get forgotten about a bit. Dal showed why he is a champ today too.

If not, close IMO and not just this year.... Has finished top three in the B&F four times I think?
Should win it this year, his numbers are very good....

Extending this thread I think Gilbo should be made VC next year. Has come back in after extended absence and barely missed a beat. Has been through some crap and come out the other end. Looks focused and committed. Deserves to get the honour IMHO if he wants it.

He's been amazing since he came back. looks bigger and stronger and plays taller and still has good skills below his knees.

Re: Joey is elite
I reckon he's had a cracker of a year but can I ask one question...how do you measure a player so you can classify him as elite? I asked this question before and it seemed to be difficult to get a definitive answer. Obviously player managers know the answer and I'm guessing it's got to do with reaching certain KPIs on a consistent level...but what are they?

Re: Joey is elite
Joey is having a superb season.
But he's been elite for many years.
Great quick hands and quick accurate disposal.
Runs hard to help teammates.
Positions himself well.
Best link player at the club.
And don't underestimate those quick contested disposals in packs that sets us up.

Re: Joey is elite
Purely my opinion, but I would say that Joey like GAJ(not to the same level) has produced higher quality performances when in an inferior side. Some may say he stands out more in a weaker team but I actually think the opposite. The ability to consistently perform well in an inferior or losing environment is what sets some apart as it takes more mental strength to keep that level when you are losing.
Joey has moved up a level not just plateaued his performance this season. He has earnt the elite tag IMO because of that.

Re: Joey is elite
Would love to know the definition of elite, how many mids in the AFL would be elite?
30, 50, 75?
3 from each club would be 54.
I reckon he's just short, and for me the reason is because over the years he has double grabbed too many times.
Been a club champion though.

Re: Joey is elite
Did anyone see his reaction after he got a hitout in the last quarter. He seemed VERY excited and started waving to someone in the back line like he had just won a bet.

Everyone would have a different measurement or simply opinion…Cairnsman wrote:I reckon he's had a cracker of a year but can I ask one question...how do you measure a player so you can classify him as elite? I think the sheer weight of numbers would suggest he is definitely elite… would also be close to his 3rd All Australian this year.
Hasn't been our best player, but probably our most consistent over the last 5 years IMO. At a guess he would be in our top 3 for all of the midfield metrics over the last 5 years - kicks, handball, tackles, contested ball, clearances etc…
Re: Joey is elite
My only problem with Joey as captain would be as winger can he isn't necessarily at the heart of the battle where most captains are eg. midfield or CHB/CHF.

Re: Joey is elite
Back on the definition of elite;
I heard or read somewhere that you need multiple B &F's and or Multiple All Australians to be elite. If Joey isn't elite he must be pretty damn close. Chris Pelchen, at the Platinum Members night showed that the club rated ONE of our list as elite, and he may or may not wear #12 on his back !!

What do you mean by double grabbed? Are you talking about his marking?maverick wrote:I reckon he's just short, and for me the reason is because over the years he has double grabbed too many times
