As the Saints prepare to meet Richmond on Friday night, Haven will meet coach Scott Watters and his players in the MCG rooms. He'll then be acknowledged on the ground as part of a new partnership with Soldier On, a charity focused on physically and psychologically wounded servicemen and women. Their mantra - ''we will always have their backs'' - is one footballers can relate to, even if their respective battles don't bear comparison.

It is not often if ever that I say this but this story made me proud to barrack for St kilda and i hope they continue to do all they can for this charity and people like Liam. It is true that we don't pay our soldiers nearly enough respect in this country but good on the Saints for this one

St Kilda's partnership with Soldier On comes from the club's recent trip to Colorado

St Kilda football club is proud to announce a new charity partnership with not for profit organisation Soldier On.
Soldier On empowers Australia’s wounded soldiers to achieve their dreams and aims to inspire Australians to come together by showing their support for physically wounded and psychologically affected service men and women.
Having experienced first-hand the recognition of returning servicemen and women from active duty at sporting events on the club’s recent training camp in Colorado, Head Coach Scott Watters and St Kilda’s leadership group have driven the creation of the partnership with Soldier On.
“When we watched the NFL and the NBA we saw how much care they showed for their returned servicemen,” backman Sean Dempster said.
“Everyone got around them, supported them and showed them how much they cared.
“It was something we wanted to get going and we have already had an affiliation with the defence force. It was something we wanted to do to show how much we care.”
The partnership will involve recognition of a returning wounded serviceman or woman at select St Kilda matches.
In the lead-up to tonight’s game against Richmond, the first Soldier On ambassador to be officially recognised by the club for their services will be Liam Haven, who was blinded when he was part of a routine patrol that was attacked in Iraq in 2008.

Liam said the partnership would be beneficial for both St Kilda and Soldier On.
“It’s more the awareness side of things, getting a big football club partnered with us will in turn get the community involved with this charity,” he said.

“A hero isn’t someone who goes overseas to serve their country, a hero is a person who helps that person.”

is Former Leading Seaman Shane Warburton SC.

He joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1992- at the age of 17. After initial training in Melbourne, Shane served in many positions throughout Australia, including border protection roles, and was deployed overseas extensively. During Operation Sumatra Assist Phase Two - the defence forces’ Earthquake relief efforts - nine ADF members lost their lives in a tragic helicopter accident on the 2nd of April 2005. Shane was one of only two survivors of the tragic accident. Shane was recognised with the presentation of Australia’s second highest bravery award, the Star of Courage, for his conspicuous bravery during the Sea King accident.

I watched this latest interview and just thought i would love the saints to find a role for kosi at the club post retirement. Great clubman and just think he would have a positive influence around the club.

He mentions during the Interview on TripleM yesterday that he is looking to do that- ....... corporate work as in Hosting I feel- there is a throw away line about Kosi's bar.....

The 25-year-old will be accompanied by his faithful Guide Dog, ‘Omen’, when he walks the 600km trek along Australia’s east coast in September. Liam hopes to raise over $1 million for Soldier On and Guide Dogs Victoria, two charities that have helped him in his rehabilitation since losing his sight whilst serving with the Australian Army in Iraq in 2008. Omen will join Liam for an average 6-8 km per day in a journey expected to take just under a fortnight.
