The Hills Hoist? The stump-jump plough? Plastic bank notes? How many of these inventions are being successfully manufactured and exported to the world?

The cochlear implant I'll give you, that's a great invention and one that an Australian company has very successfully commercialised. They bring in hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Wifi being "invented in Australia" is complete crap. A team at the CSIRO put together some tech that already existed, using it in an effective way but one that others had also been doing for years. But CSIRO patented it first, then completely failed to make any useful products using it. They gave up and since then they've flown around the world suing people. This isn't an example of innovation, it's an example of the fundamental problems with the patent system.

As a country we're good at sport. But we're s*** at making products the world wants to buy.

The last of the Hills Hoists have been removed by the Backyard blitz guys. They aren't trendy or cool it seems. So I assume that all these trendy cool people use electric clothes dryers rather than an amazing solar wind energy device. I think Hills ( who actually started producing steel tubeing so they could supply their other products ) are now mainly importing. Its still good quality stuff.

Isn't there some company in Queensland making cool guns? ( So now I google it ). Oops very cool but not looking good. Maybe if they opened some stores in Loosianna . http://www.news.com.au/business/compani ... 6435689065

University of Queensland and some of the Australian Defense force divisions seem to have been involved with Scramjet technology and testing.

I worked for Orbital Engine company for a while, but it was definitely NQR.

They were certainly innovative in their sales techniques. Bribery, corruption, all sorts of unconventional tactics. Not exactly what we'd hope to be associated with as a country!

We're usually good at that sort of basic research stuff but we often don't actually own the IP or benefit hugely from it.

When I was there the Original concept was dead and buried and Ralph had used to money he made by manipulating the share price to get into real estate. ( when the shares go up and down that much its good to know when the press releases will be ). Wow there were some smart people working there, but a bit like the guys on Big Bang theory, they didn't always have direction, or see the big picture.
I believe the original concept was limited by the use of "Vanes" at best it would be as good as a Wankel engine ( which is still limited ) but would struggle to get there. Because of the shape of the combustion chambers, even if it obtained the benefit of less parts and was cheaper and more compact it would struggle to match a 4 stroke for efficiency.
When I was there they were trying to apply the direct petrol injection they had developed as a side project.
They were trying to sell a 2 stroke injected engine ( based on a Suzuki 2 stroke outboard ) as a commercial engine to Automotive customers.
They were tyring to sell their injection for outboard motors that were struggling to meet emissions legislation ( now largely 4 stroke ).
They were trying develop a cheap fuel injection to make the 2 strokes that were polluting much of Asia cheaper. ( unreliable and expensive, pollies in asia could have solved the problem by simply banning 2 strokes ). I think they actually marketed their direct injection 4 stroke technology.

Agreed. That's still more an "invention" than successful, commercial worldwide brand. Unfortunately I don't think the Australian economy has picked up a great deal of export revenue thanks to the black box.

I'm not a fan of Gardosil, since my daughter started randomly fainting and having dizzy spells. She never fainted in her life until her Gardosil shot. Then it started. Can't prove anything without conducting clinical trials involving thousands of people of course. But Japan for example, have stopped using it as a Standard Vaccine.
Its effectiveness is also under question.

Rotary Lawn mower was a good one, but its long since become anyone's.
