Is the group severely fractured between the vets and the kids?
What sort of message does that behaviour portray for our future?
That's the key take away. I love Rooey and expect he'll get his head readjusted over the off season and realise his number one job is to mentor the kids and support them everywhere they travel with us.
It's no longer about winning and trying to win flags and make finals. It's about trying to put together three solid quarters of footy a game and gradually work towards four quarter efforts during the late part of 2014/early 2015.
Rooey as our leader needs to get all the vets to buy into this attitude or some of our talented kids may walk and we'll be another Melbourne.
+1.
Good thoughts in your post sp. Most of the sycophants on here won't even bother to ponder the questions you pose if it warrants any criticism of Rooy but it gets you thinking...
I am certain that he is learning to be a mentor and he wants to be enthusiastic and do the 'get around him' thingy But it just doesn't look like it comes naturally to him.
The club has failed dismally in recruiting and developing new talent prior to Pelchin. Not Rooys fault that the team is sitting in 16th position on the ladder or that we have created a situation where there is a huge gap in games played between the new guys and the veterans on the list.
Roo has earned the respect of the footy world for his feats on the field and his skills and his workrate and his courage....but is he the best person to captain the saints youth RIGHT NOW in this phase of the rebuild. Maybe yes maybe no. No one jumps out as the obvious candidate to take over, but maybe the decision will be easy for coaches and club if 2014 is his last year anyway.
Interestingly at the end, roo thanked everyone and said it probably won't be rooeys recruits next year...not sure what to read into that, might pass it on

He huffs and puffs but really doesnt do as much as his body language suggests.
Hes nowhere near as good as Roughhead and miles behind Buddy.
Us Saints fans over rate him.
You have no idea.
agree, the whole league respects his efforts and how he runs guys into the ground... hardly think he's overrated. he just about in AA form again this year.
guys kicking has not been the same since he tore his HS but all us keyboard experts know about torn HS and how that effects your future game.
And that's all very nice but his body language is appalling. Hands on head, hands on hips, and his facial expressions that belies someone that all is not well.
And I can tolerate some of it but berating team mates out on the ground is not good and won't be helping team morale. Why are they going to kick it to him if there is every chance they'll cop a spray if the kick and/or ark is fluffed?
I also noticed the lack of a captain's pat on the back for Minchington following his first goal. Very poor.
I felt very sad watching Nick playing last night. His kicking was off (more than normally) but more of a concern to me was the fact that sometimes he could not hang on to a mark. It would appear that he is in some difficulties re his physical condition and is "playing hurt", now IF we were a chance for the top 4/8 (or even just knocking at the door) I'd say play the guy at all costs. The truth is that we are in the position we are in , and it makes next to no difference now if he plays or not. This is NOT a criticism of our captain, but a simple wish that he gets himself up and about for 2014 at 100% fitness, an early finish to 2013 could be the key to this happening.
hes a great player
Top 5 Sanits of all time.
Maybe AFL top 100 of all time
But not an AFL all time great like us sainters like to think. I rate him similar to Pav and Richo
.
Games Kicks Handballs Disposals Marks Goals Behinds
Roo 256 3044 1122 4166 2206 562 375
Pav 284 3525 1592 5117 1697 565 344

Pavlich, Richo, Chris Grant, Riewoldt, Barry Hall &Loewe sit right at the top of the second tier.
Top tier IMHO G Ablett snr Carey Lockett Dunstall Brereton J Brown Kernahan
(Kp forwards only last 20 years}

Do you rate Brown that high because he was lucky enough to play in premierships. Vastly overrated IMO. Roo has been a far more consistent performer.
Don't disagree with Roo's rating though, just think you rate JB too highly.

i agree on Riewoldts rating though.
Fair enough re Brown, his contributions in 4 GF's were just average statistically.
Amazing the stuff we think we remember that is found to be false on further investigation.

Sainterk - you have made 18000 posts so I am sure not always full of s*** - but Rooney was at least 30m from Mitch when he kicked the goal Mitch then ran in the opposite direction to roo - and 5 guys came over to congratulate him - given a tendency to gross exaggeration I assume your comments about roo handing over cap is also bulls***.
I have a mate who will go feral if you rated J Brown in the top tier. Reckons hes massively over rated.
The thing about J Brown is he has many quiet games where he does absolutely nothing - so no way is in that upper group..
