Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
Given Scott's conference you'd think Seb should be in line for a call up.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Shents looks like he's playing like a cornered rat and wants his turn. I wish we could get him up for at least a couple to see if he could make it.

You have some awesome analogies mate…gringo wrote:Shents looks like he's playing like a cornered rat and wants his turn. I wish we could get him up for at least a couple to see if he could make it.
Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
At this rate he might be almost as good as Ben Ross, Shane Valenti, Steve Clifton or Myles Sewell.BigMart wrote:Cockie again?....

Forgot Magner?
Or as good as Hibbert, Barlow, Giles, Jones, Podsiadly, Davey, Callinan, Lee, Saad, Zorko, Martin, Dwyer.... And so on...

Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
I was only including the last four Liston winners, none of whom seem to be good enough for AFL. Magner hasn't won a Liston and this year he's only managed two AFL games for the second bottom side.BigMart wrote:Forgot Magner?
Sure. So your point is that some players are good enough and some players aren't?BigMart wrote:Or as good as Hibbert, Barlow, Giles, Jones, Podsiadly, Davey, Callinan, Lee, Saad, Zorko, Martin, Dwyer.... And so on...
Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
Bergholt, clearly Melbourne are going down a rebuilding path and so Magner at age 25 and on the rookie list might be overlooked for a younger player despite being in good form. Many good VFL players are good enough to play AFL. Throw Myles Sewell in any AFL team and he would do fine. 100%. Stupid argument

So rebuilds dont include 25 year olds who you say are good enough to play AFL footy. I worry about Armo in a year then.
Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
Why have 18 teams avoided drafting Sewell for years now, then? His brother's an AFL premiership player and Myles himself won a Liston, surely they know who he is. And yet they keep passing up the opportunity. GWS picked up Steve Clifton ahead of him but Clifton barely played and then got delisted. Are you sure these guys are good enough to play AFL? Because the facts suggest otherwise.westcoast wrote:Bergholt, clearly Melbourne are going down a rebuilding path and so Magner at age 25 and on the rookie list might be overlooked for a younger player despite being in good form. Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
Sometimes players don't get an opportunity for whatever reason, sometimes it's timing or chance.....
There are plenty of examples of State League players stepping up and being VG at afl level..... And visa versa...
Again need to look at individual player characteristics, not whether other clubs overlooked them or what comp they come from (plenty of TAC Cup kids flop) can the develop is the only question.
No blinkers in recruiting..... I would suggest
Use all formats, scour all avenues, leagues..... Pick talent...

So if I understand correctly you're saying we should only pick players that we think are going to improve and turn out to be good?BigMart wrote:Sometimes players don't get an opportunity for whatever reason, sometimes it's timing or chance.....

What a breakthrough! Ring the club immediately, Elshaugh needs to hear this ASAP, might change our whole strategy!

Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
Thats a remarkable 11 out of his 14 games he's been named in the best! Will win B&F by country mile and would go close to giving the Liston a shake if it wasnt for his suspension other week.BigMart wrote:Cockie again?....
Speaking to couple players (AFL & VFL) they said they'd be shocked if he wasnt picked by AFL club this year, is by far best mature aged state league midfielder out there.

The question that must be asked if we pick him up is will he be a average mid which wont help a side like us as shown with Magner or will he be at least a GOP and help our side. I think Chris Cain and Tim Allan are a very big chance to go in the draft. Allan certainly has an X factor. cain is more a worker and not suited to our club IMO.
Re: VFL: Sandringham vs Northern Blues
No, my point is dont wear blinkers when recruiting?
Made it pretty clear.....
Cockie is a good footballer.... Will easily step up to AFL level.... Has a lot more pace than reported, he is explosive over the first 5 metres
