Re: I love rooey
Well said Sir. Roo is a perfectionist and seeing his dream of a premiership medal disappear is making him pretty prickly lately. But what a great example when he ran from miles behind to put pressure on a hawks player streaming through the middle when he could have just coasted.Dr Spaceman wrote:Absolute superstar. A privilege to have watched his career. The Fireman wrote: I can't bring myself to bag him and nor can I find a valid reason. Superstar but unfortunately too many have short memories
We Saints supporters have been on an unbelievable roller coaster ride with Roo over the last 13 years. Seen the freakishly talented #1 Draft Pick start to bloom in the GT years and almost lead us to the ultimate success years later. We've seen him come back from an horrific hamstring injury and try to lift an aging and battered team into the finals one last time. And now, when we are in a rebuild phase with no prospects of short term success, the bloke just keeps presenting.
Flaws? Yep he's got a few. But stuffed if I'm gonna make a deal out of them.

I rate roughy way over buddy. This year he's been a weapon.Con Gorozidis wrote:His kicking is atrocious.
He huffs and puffs but really doesnt do as much as his body language suggests.
Hes nowhere near as good as Roughhead and miles behind Buddy.
Us Saints fans over rate him.

Re: I love rooey
Great player but over rated by saints fans.
Probably similar to neitz I reckon.
Similar to stewy loewe and also Pav.
Around that status.
Bloody great players all four of them but not quite superstars.
I know everyone gets juiced up about Roos fruitless chasing and multiple leads and doublebacks but if you stick to actual effectiveness he's no better than those other three guys.
If his kicking was better he'd have 700 career goals and two flags but it isn't.

Re: I love rooey
Too great a player to knock.
May have some flaws ,but has been a legend of our club.
He misses a few shots , but so does Buddy, and he won't ever captain a club .
Still performs at top level , not overrated at all.
Still leads by example.
A great captain and shouldn't be criticised .
Who else has performed to his standard over there careers.?

Agree totally, that was disgustingJohnny Member wrote:Should have been blooded as a CHB years ago.
His attitude is simply disgusting at present.
Spraying Ray for daring to have a ping from 30m, after he's missed 5 shots under no pressure himself is appalling leadership.

Re: I love rooey
The biggest issue for the future was that only 3 players went to Minch to congratulate him after kicking his first goal. The captain wasn't one of the three.
Is the group severely fractured between the vets and the kids?
What sort of message does that behaviour portray for our future?
That's the key take away. I love Rooey and expect he'll get his head readjusted over the off season and realise his number one job is to mentor the kids and support them everywhere they travel with us.
It's no longer about winning and trying to win flags and make finals. It's about trying to put together three solid quarters of footy a game and gradually work towards four quarter efforts during the late part of 2014/early 2015.
Rooey as our leader needs to get all the vets to buy into this attitude or some of our talented kids may walk and we'll be another Melbourne.

agree, the whole league respects his efforts and how he runs guys into the ground... hardly think he's overrated. he just about in AA form again this year.CURLY wrote:You have no idea.Con Gorozidis wrote:His kicking is atrocious.

guys kicking has not been the same since he tore his HS but all us keyboard experts know about torn HS and how that effects your future game.

Roo has been brilliant - no question but HAS is the operative word. We can't rebuild the forward line with the kick it to Roo policy still in place.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

PJ wrote:Roo has been brilliant - no question but HAS is the operative word. We can't rebuild the forward line with the kick it to Roo policy still in place.
So what does the club do. Surely players kick it to the best option and if he is the one making the best option they have to kick it to him. I doubt any coach is saying kick it mainly to Roo. Our other forwrds have to learn to present like Rooy and then they will get the ball kicked to them.
Re: I love rooey
A rebuild means just that, time to consider other options especially if our current option can't kick goals. Pretty simple if you take the emotion out of it. Roo = champ in the historical sense. Great memories but time to move on.
Wing is an option but not forward.

Why would you move him to the wing because he isnt the future. if thats the case move Joey to the BP and Dal out of the side. None of those players will be around next time we make the finals and neither will Dempster, Gwilt, Schneider and so on. Rooy is ony 30 years of age and can teach the forwards how to position themselves while he is still playing in the forward line. Completely different if we had many good tall forwards but we dont. Well not yet anyway.
Im guessing there werent many knocking his kicking or his performance just 5 weeks ago. I reckon I could look for less than 5 minutes and find many threads where people have said his kicking has improved this year and he is back in AA form. Whatever a Saints player shouldnt do is have a few ordinary weeks. They certainly have been bad weeks though.

Re: I love rooey
I don't know what others thought, but it was so depressing watching Roo shank those 3 shots in the first qtr when we were flying. Then watch the ball go to Roughy down the other end, and he never looked like missing. So deflating. I suspect it was for his team mates as well.

You telling me hes better than Pav, Neitz and Stewie?
Hes not as good as Richo was imho.
I also think the word 'superstar' is used wayyyy too often in the AFL in general.
Re: I love rooey
I'm suggesting that Roo should not be the go to forward - he clearly can't finish atm. He can get the ball, but atm I'd be happier with almost half our team having a shot before him. Look he'll be there to the bitter end but if you were to be clinical you wouldn't have him on the end of it, it's kind of like watching that Luxbet add atm showing the worst shots for goal. Why bother just show nick's highlights.
