Better result using Cocaine than supplement
While Saad deserves suspension if guilty ( for stupidity if nothing else) , I think there is a real issue with the AFL drugs policy whereby something like this which is a stimulant banned only on game day sees a 2 year ban and public lambasting ( thank goodness for Essendon) a player get caught twice with rec drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy, weed, speed or worse gets covered up and hid from all and sundry especially the clubs which have resources to help at times. Which is more dangerous to the individual and their career?

One doesnt help you the other does in the eyes of WADA. If Saad had cocaine on match day he would get 2 years and if he had the energy drink on non match days he would get to go to the toilet.
They are 2 completely different drug rules. If usain Bolt used cocaine every day of the week and WADA did a test on a non meeting day they wouldnt give a rats.

One is cheating hence 2-year ban. Rec drugs are more of a social issue and let's face it most of them would be detrimental to performance.

I've always seen the humour in people who think recreational drugs would boost an individuals performance on match day.....
Have these people actually had any experience with recreational drugs, as in taking them?

Some of the so called recreational drugs make you fearless, "go where man fears to tread". They can also stop or hinder the "tired" receptors giving the ability to keep going as exemplified by the various 3 or 4 day benders some ice users go on.The Saintsational Man wrote:I've always seen the humour in people who think recreational drugs would boost an individuals performance on match day.....

Then there are the downers that encourage you to be mellow and relax in the corner.
I am still hurting from 71;
my gut churns thinking of 97;
2009 was agony,
2010a was a pleasure to watch only to be devastated by 2010 b.
It hurts barracking for the Saints

Point was more a statement about the FAL drug policy rather than the benefits or otherwise of rec drugs v stimlants and performance enhancing drugs.
No quite glad to have no experience in rec drug taking myself, however have done a bit of research in to the potential benefits of some rec drugs in performance enhancement. Mixed studies but an argument does exist for some rec drugs acting as a stimulant

Re: Better result using Cocaine than supplement
like OS has already pointed out, this wasn't a direct comparison but a reflection on the fact that a player that uses cocaine/speed/weed etc gets off scottfree whilst Saad who used a legal supplement at the wrong time is potentially banned for 2 years.
Whilst it's not a like for like comparison, I think it is worth reflecting on

Re: Better result using Cocaine than supplement
Recreational drug use is a personal matter; not the business of the AFL, media or public. Performance enhancing drug use is cheating within a multi million dollar sporting competition. A huge number of AFL players use illegal recreational drugs, largely because it's a release for them that is healthier than drinking alcohol (with meth, heroin and the like excluded).
Would you rather our opposition do a few lines in the off-season as an alternative to writing themselves off with alcohol or have a systematic PED program designed to give them an advantage over the rest of the competition?

Re: Better result using Cocaine than supplement
Armies used to send men into battle wired on amphetamines because they could go all day and concentrate all day and not feel pain as much and not get tired. So yes, in that sense, stimulants definitely can be performance enhancing.On the Bench wrote:Some of the so called recreational drugs make you fearless, "go where man fears to tread". Other recreational drugs not so much
