Re: Rhys on the table
He actually isn't bad around the centre bounces. Just can't play any other position.

Re: Rhys on the table
At the moment our situation demands that he play in the back line however next week with Roo out I think he might have to play CHF ,it's been a learning year for big Rhys and he had at least put neatly 20 odd games in a row together ,hopefully next year he gets to play on a hff in a forward line with Lee,Roo etc ,he would be very hard to match up on in that role tall, strong, fast and a lovely kick but at the moment lets just hang in there with him as this is his first full season and even Watters says he is being played out of position!

Re: Rhys on the table
Thought he was on his way to be a really good player last year...his confidence up, clunking marks and kicking them from 60m.
Seems to be shattered now. We are desperate for a FB, and Rhys, if we do hold on to him should just play FF (changing Ruck)...that's It!

Re: Rhys on the table
Stanley is a forward. Probably a hit up half forward that plays from the 25m mark up to the wings. He can kick a long ball, and run like the wind.
Playing him down back is for two reasons. Reason one is due to us being a couple of key back men short. Reason two is to teach him some accountability and fundamental skills of the game. Trading him now would be extremely short sighted and it would bite us on the backside a couple of years down the track. He has absolutely no confidence at the moment because he has been thrown to the wolves somewhat and has had to stand on some solid and experienced forwards this season. This year has been a freakin howler for him.
At the moment we have almost no team balance. There is failing structure that starts at full back and seeps its way all the way to full forward because of it. Stanley barely even falls into our forward make up at the moment because every week we need him to play down back. If he goes forward he ends up floating in a pocket trying to stay out of Riewoldt's way. He dropped a couple of soda's last week. If he had of held those marks, even off this weeks loss you would be feeling that he has more upside.
He needs to get more tank about him. He has to hold onto his pace, but develop the ability to use it all day. He is the strongest bloke at the club apparently, which you would not think of to look at him. We are not giving him any opportunity to use his strengths in any way at the moment.
I can see him controlling one wing to half forward with White on the other side. Unless he is a complete head case, there is absolutely no way he should be traded. 95% of the coaches in the comp would love to take him in a trade. He has currency because there is just so much potential there. Any coach would want him on their list. Trading him would be an incredible mistake.
Too much knee jerking, reactionary bulls*** going on around here. If we had a game plan, any game plan that actually played to some of Stanley's strengths then this thread would not even exist.

Re: Rhys on the table
Sit him in the forward line.
He has the speed to play the defensive forward role.
He does not read the play well so tell him when the ball is in the forward line to simply hunt it or the person with it.
When we have the ball in the midfield just to run to open space hopefully pulling a defender with him.
Make him reactive to the game as he seems to have no ability to be predictive.
Think about a defender trying to run the ball out of defense when someone with Stanley's size and elite speed breathing down their necks, could make them rush things a bit.
If you are not going to do that with him send him back to Sandy.

Re: Rhys on the table
Stanley needs to find the attitude to compete. No matter where he has played this year he just doesn't have the attack on the footy or the man that's required. Until he learns how to compete then position is a bit irrelevant

Re: Rhys on the table
Rhys must play ruck or be traded.
I rate him as a ruckman but we can't keep up this fantasy he can play kpp.

Re: Rhys on the table
The coaching group are certainly not allowing him to maximise the potential that most think he has, by playing him on the backline. The "four points" have not counted for many games now, so why not play him in one position, to see how he develops. What position? I would like to see him at CHF, with Roo at full forward, for a much needed rest.
Re: Rhys on the table
His flaw is that his reactions are so slow. The Geelong player who ran around him in the 1st qtr while he didn't even know what was happening. In packs he just looks lost "whats happening, where's the ball, where should I run to?". Up forward its more straight forward for him "Me see ball, me mark ball" and he can use his size and skills. Keep but want to see improvement next year and having bulked up a bit.

We obviously need some ball winners in the middle to get it to them, but I would love to see the opposition match us with Roo Lee and Stanley in the forward line.
Rhys's efforts in a contested marking situation need to be highlighted to him. At the moment you are being paid to defend. It's simple really. He needs to go for the footy at every contest and defend or try and at least stop your opponent, not just choose when it's your turn to go hard. Find a way Rhys or go and play VFL

Re: Rhys on the table
If Stanley can't kick a bag in the vfl I'm not sure why people fantasise about him kicking a bag in the Afl .
Apart from being tall blonde and fast - on what basis is this idea about him as a fwd. Any good fwd in the afl has always kicked bags in the vfl. Bags.
Due to the dearth of kids with any talent at our club in the last 7 years (jack aside) we have tended to over rate our kids. Everyone thought Rhys would be the next roo and siposs the next bj. We all got carried away and it was all based on hope rather than fact.

Re: Rhys on the table
Agree he is a forward ( possible ruck/ forward)
We need him to play down back right now , not ideal but we need to be patient, not over reactive.
See what happens next season if we get a couple of key defenders.
With Roo out it would have been a good time to move him, but with Gwilt out it's a catch 22
We will have enough players about to be retired / delisted without throwing out someone who may turn out to be a good player and at least has some experience.

Re: Rhys on the table
Stanley will come good IMO. He showed some really good signs earlier this year and even though he isn't going so well at the moment the positive is he's racking up games and getting some conditioning into his body. He will be better for it next year IMO.

He has to be because if he isnt he will be gone at the end of next year. We have been a major disappointment and I think that is proven when the only positive is playing a good amount of games in a row.
Re: Rhys on the table
I would have thought most players were on the table. Not sure why Rhys is singled out other than he has upside/potential and therefore of value.
Some pretty average performances from our list so to be pulled out as being on the table suggests he has something.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
