Sign up Watters to 2016
If we want to attract ANY great player. assistant coach or administrator to our club we need to have certainty over the coach for the next 3 years.
If we want to retain sponsors sign him up
The reality is that by 2016 we will still only be in the bottom 4-6 clubs as the rebuild of the drafting calamity of the last 5 years is going to take at least til then
If things are still crap by then change the coach who will inherit a playing list on the verge of possible finals
Even if Watters is a crap coach, Its unlikely he'll be around long enough to see us win a flag. As long as we recruit well over the next 2-3 years and have some half decent player development then does it really matter who our coach is?
If we were to sack Watters at a time where we are at our lowest point what message would that send?
For the next 3 years the most important people at St Kilda are the recruiting staff and development coaches. In reality until we properly rejuvenate our list Watters role is more of a figurehead and developer of the kids than anything else

Agree One Eye.
Im only praying Watters IS the development guru. In saying that, we do also need to educate young players on game sense/tactics and strategy and therefore Watters must be surrounded by top notch assistants and we need to overhaul current ones.

Who said sack him?
Let him finish his current contract and move him on.
Sponsors etc will always want to be aboard an afl club .
Don't agree with a contract extension at all....IMO

Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
It's impossible to rate Watters as a coach due to the crap list he inherited from Lyin..
Watters has to waste his coaching career trying to rebuild a competitive team for the St Kilda football club.
chances are he'll get the empty once the turnaround is obvious.. very unlucky in his timing for a senior coaching job..

Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
Isn't that the challenge of any coach to build a successful team.?bobmurray wrote:It's impossible to rate Watters as a coach due to the crap list he inherited from Lyin..

The coaches that can't do that can't coach.
So your saying he's a dill for taking the job on in the first place?
He would go known what he was walking into....
That was his challenge!

Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
You know what tends to attract supporters, sponsors and the admiration and respect of people in the industry? Winning. If Watters doesn't start doing it soon, stability will be the next guy's problem.
1-7 in single-digit games. The one we blew a big lead. I don't care how bad the list is, if the games are close, you should win some of them.

Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
What I am saying is he needs to rebuild, that takes time, the players he needs are not always available the year you really need them, that is another of his challenges.Greg T wrote:Isn't that the challenge of any coach to build a successful team.?bobmurray wrote:It's impossible to rate Watters as a coach due to the crap list he inherited from Lyin..

it is so easy on a forum to fix the teams issues, it's not as easy in reality, I hope you lot can deal with that .

Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
Well said. How long have Richmond, Melbourne, North, Brisbane, Port Adelaide been rebuilding? We just missed out on finals last year and now we've had one genuinely bad year. Watters needs 5 years to build the squad the way HE wants not this mish-mash he's inherited.bobmurray wrote:What I am saying is he needs to rebuild, that takes time, the players he needs are not always available the year you really need them, that is another of his challenges.Greg T wrote:Isn't that the challenge of any coach to build a successful team.?bobmurray wrote:It's impossible to rate Watters as a coach due to the crap list he inherited from Lyin..

Exactly. He may well be a dud coach. We wil have a much better idea in 12 months. It's not like he'll be inundated with job offers at the moment.....plugger66 wrote:Dont sack but for gods ake dont sign untilt least this time nect year.

Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
I totally agree.
Watters appears to have the faith of the players and is only very new to the caper. Lets face it nobody could be doing much better at this stage. Changing coaches at this stage will do more harm than good. Way more.

Have to agree somewhat..sponsors and potential members don't jump on board a long term project, they want to jump on board winners. This is the big time, not junior footy.vacuous space wrote:You know what tends to attract supporters, sponsors and the admiration and respect of people in the industry? Winning. Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
We need to get some fresh blood in at board level. Hey, I hear there may be some people available from one of the "Winner" power clubs.
Your friendly neighbourhood samurai.
Re: Sign up Watters to 2016
Did Richmond sack Hardwick at the end of his first contract when they were deplorable, or Hawthorn with Clarkson? No, they backed them in and understood that a rebuild takes time. Sacking a coach during a rebuild is nothing but counter productive. Stick by Watters and let him have a crack at it properly!!
