Stanley

Post: # 1359125Post MC Gusto »

Just wondering who here reckons he's going to make it? As in make it big time be a gun A grade AFL player. To me he has all the attributes but just doesn't look natural..? Or maybe just doesn't utilise those attributes like you'd think he could or should.

At the moment the best way to describe him would be a "TEASE". Like you said, he has the attributes. I suppose its up to him to best utilise them !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

I would like Stanley to make the grade.. BIG Time.

Got a little way to go yet to avoid a GOP rating.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

One of our few players with genuine trade value. Just saying.

He has the physical attributes but I fear he lacks the footy smarts to become even an average player. Being in WA I don't get to see our team live very often but his effort against the Dockers last weekend was sub-standard. Maybe he is carrying an injury, but he looked disinterested and provided nothing for the team as a key forward. I would throw him into the middle just to get him involved in the game and get his hands on the ball.

Actually feel he has become a little gun shy in using his speed since his hammy problems.

His headspace is everywhere....

Started the as a defender, lost confidence and plan was abandoned..... As you know I was completely against the (next D Fletcher) idea long term, but could see the merit short term with no tall defenders at all....

If you put the plan into place, allow I time to develop... I actually think two of his best games were at CHB, but two bad ones he was moved for good?
Same with Siposs, spent the entire summer training as a HB winger, and 1 or 2 average games.... Plan abandoned, even though he dominated two pre season games there.... And he lost his confidence also...

Both obviously are long term forwards.... But time at HB would have helped their education, whilst utilising their attributes.

We're low on talls so not worth trading him for the sake of it unless we received a massive offer we couldn't refuse. A swap for Sloane and then I'd start to listen.

Give him time. 35 games does not make a player.

Agree with most things you said - but why is it so 'obvious' that Stanley is a long term fwd?
What is that based on?
Goals kicked in VFL? Goals kicked at SANFL? Goals kicked at AFL?

Siposs has at least kicked a truckload of goals as a kid - but sheesh massive step up being a a fwd in the AFL. I dont think too many defenders would be worried about manning up on Siposs with all due respect at the moment...

Im starting to think Stanley is a ruckman or nothing.

On the wing!!!!
His best attribute is his pace.
So get him on the wing and tell him to run and dodge and kick to a one on one contest in the 50.
If not have a ping from 50.

He's a high leaping ruckman who can do a bit back and a bit forward.

I think he will make it. Has some outstanding attributes and has had a few good games. Tippett and Tex looked like spuds for a long time. Liam Jones for the dogs is in a similar position but I think he will be good long term too.

Tex Walker kicked 56 goals in the SANFL including 7 in a final - aged 18

Kurt Tippet kicked 55 goals in 2009 in the AFL - aged 22.

I'm starting to believe Stanley is a ruckman or nothing.

I think he's probably our most natural ruckman & yet has hardly been given a go in that position.

As it stands....agree with a previous poster - due to his elite attributes he'd have a bit of trade currency if we were that way inclined.

There was the game vs west coast last year where due to injuries Stanley got thrown in the ruck. Up until he tore his hammy he was beating the nic nac / cox duo.
Mind you he only played a qtr (if that) prior to the tear

Any defender would hate standing a 200cm (think Tippett) fwd who can jump and catch it. Stanley just needs to HTFU and impose himself with effort ATM, effort is why he hasn't been effective fwd... All about work rate as a fwd, he doesn't work and make it to enough contests, it's that simple.... Same could be said for Siposs (about work rate) Stanley shows glimpses because he can run, jump, mark kick....

Siposs is an absolute natural football, and if he gets to a contest will probably be dangerous, either creating or finishing.

If Lee ca stand up

The forward line of the future should have

Stanley..... Deep fwd, back up Ruckman
White/Lee.... Deep fwd, CHF rotation
Saad/Minchington.... Small forward
Lee/Siposs...... Third forward rotation hit up work horse
Murdoch/Markworth/Siposs ..... Medium forward rotation

The other fwd has to be a midfield rotation.... Steven, Armitage, Ross and another couple of players rotate through there.

Extreme athleticism in White, Stanley, Markworth, Saad, Steven... For offensive danger, defensive pressure

Overhead talent
Sipposs, Murdoch, Lee, Stanley, White

Ground level creativity
Siposs, Saad, Minchington, Steven, Armitage

They will add to a very dangerous forward line... Post Riewoldt

He's a ruckman of the future who can jump and not a lumbering type of ruckman.
