Roosters mark FitzGerald’s milestone with win
North Ballarat Roosters have celebrated coach Gerard FitzGerald’s 300h VFL match in charge with a stirring 14-point victory over Sandringham.
Six goals to defender-come-forward Bryce Curnow, four of them in an inspired third term, and four to Pat Nicholls helped the Roosters prevail at home 17.12 (114) to 15.10 (100).
Liam Anthony was everywhere early and had 21 possessions before the main break to lift he Roosters to a 19-point lead at the main break.
Anthony’s influence diminished only slightly in the second half as the midfielder finished with two goals in a best on ground display.
The Delaney brothers, Cameron and Luke, and Oliver Tate were impressive in defence, while on-ballers Myles Sewell and Steve Clifton played their part to ensure their long-time mentor celebrated his milestone match in the best possible way.
Ahmed Saad bagged five goals for the Zebras and was instrumental in helping his fight back from a 25-point deficit at the last change.
Tom Curren was another star with 33 disposals, while Josh Saunders (23) and Adam Cockie (19) were solid contributors.
St Kilda champion Lenny Hayes accumulated 5 possessions in the first half before being rested in the second.
