With a pick in the top 5 and in desperate need of young midfield talent.. asap.
What happens I ask, if Tom Boyd (likely #1 draft pick future power forward of the competition) slips through to us?
Would you take him?
Would Pelchen & co. consider it? Having made our desire for midfielders known.
We have Lee and White waiting in the wings..
1 of the 5 best young midfielders in the land, or the sort of player you can build a whole team around..
It's a tough one.
Love to hear your thoughts
if boyd was still available at our pick....and he won't be....you would take him without a second thought......
Exactly!

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
all things being equal - go the best midfielder available.
if by some bizarre chance a KPP ( like boyd) who is clearly better than the next best midfielder falls on our lap - take the better player for sure.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
on footy classified they raised the question...
GWS finish last. With Patton, Cameron and potentially Franklin, would they take Boyd if he was the best player and they had number 1.
Would take a ballsy recruiter to go next best Mid/Def. But would it be the right call. If they were relatively close in talent, it probably would be!

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
They'd have to. Thay've got a couple of tall forwards and a wall of mids. They're going to have the same oversupply problem unless they take a ruck or a defender. They have to take the best player. Patton could be anything between Kosi and Hawkins. Cameron could wind up not taking the next step. If they all work out, show me the problem? At worst, you trade one and start the cycle on the next generation of talent. Maybe you move one of them back as they aren't as stacked in back six talls.Spinner wrote:With Patton, Cameron and potentially Franklin, would they take Boyd if he was the best player and they had number 1.
If somebody offered them something attractive, they'd probably move back. Realistically, that's not going to be an over-25 and a pick. They're going to want key pieces for their next 100+ games.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
I think hes a chance to slip to us. G.W.S. have patton, cameron and looking more likely buddy. Melbourne have mitch clarke, dawes and jesse hogan( i think the boys name is).
They will probably take scharenberg and aish that are standouts as well. So tom boyd is a good chance for us. If the dogs get a pick before us game over they will be all over
him. Perhaps pick 3 and a player even 2 for pick 1 is worth a thought, apparently they are keen to get some senior players onto their list. Any ideas????

Note haven't seen this guy play.
This is exactly the sort of creative thing I'd expect the Pelican to do.
The rebuild looks a lot more promising with the best 18yo forward the country.
Farren Ray and pick 3 for pick 1/2?
Or perhaps 2 draft picks in return for pick 1?

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
I reckon you take the best player with the RAREST qualities for a top 10 pick. (Hence, a lot of Ruckmen go in the top ten, even though logic would say you should be trading for them when they're 23).saintsRrising wrote:With a Top 5 you take BEST available.
Normally at that level there is still a big difference...you just go on whho you rate as best.
Depending on the strength of the draft, after ten-ish or so it is a lot more blurred and you may start to be influenced by role.
A big forward, therefore, would be best and rarest.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Thinking about this a bit more...
You can't draft a list of 38 tall forwards thus this suggests there is a line somewhere between the philosophies of 'best available' and 'needs basis'.
Just where that line is, is the question!

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
I don't think a key forward is a huge need. If he slips to us, take him as he's a clear number one. GWS will either take him or trade their number 1 pick for an experienced player. The bigger worry is the AFL giving Melbourne a compensation pick for being so pathetic, which will mean we get the fourth or fifth best midfielder in the draft instead of the second or third best, taking Jack Martin the 17 year old gold coast have in to consideration. Don't build Boyd up to be the messiah and then be shattered if we don't get him. Its not realistic.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Which player would you take from…
Patton, Cameron, Whitfield, O'Meara
?
We're extremely likely to have at least one of White/Lee fail, so I don't think we are overloaded with power forwards really. It would be weird to draft another tall forwards when we are so lacking in mids and tall backs though.

or perhaps trade for Patton or Cameron and keep #3
I know this is just shooting s.hit, I dont know how we could do it.
Just thinking if GWS has patton, Cameron, possibly Franklin and other key forwards, would they be willing to trade a key forward so they could then take Boyd?
This means we get a forward who has been in the system for a couple of years (or Patton who has a knee) and use #3 on the best available mid.
Patton, Lee, Wight, Stanley, Markworth. Not quite what GWS have but not a bad forward line without sacrificing #3.
Just sayin'
I could see Pelchan throwing that one out.
Lance or James??

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Ideal world would see us trading McEvoy and pick 3, for pick 1 & Adams (maybe a shuffle to get their compo pick for our second rounder.
Actually, ideal world would see McEvoy and a second rounder traded for Adams and a first round compo, then for us to use the compo to get Frawley and pick three would go to Boyd having seen GWS and Dees overlook him.
We can only dream! Then to see Dan Currie crack the sads at North and walk to us for pick 70!

At 17 it's still speculation
Richmond were the team that missed out on the prized #1 selection in 2007
Consolation was only Trent Cotchin
Rarely has the number 1 even turned out the best of the top 5.... And not often in the best 5 of the overall draft

As i said spinner, I would absolutely no idea how we could do it.
Maybe 2nd round Dal Santo and Roos first born???????

Rarely has the number 1 even turned out the best of the top 5.... And not often in the best 5 of the overall draft
1999 - #1 Josh Fraser; best player = Pavlich #4
2000 - #1 Nick Riewoldt
2001 - #1 Luke Hodge; best players = Judd #3, Ablett F/S.... (Swan, Johnson, Bartel, Dal Santo)
2002 - #1 Brendon Goddard
2003 - #1 Adam Cooney
2004 - #1 Brett Deledio; best player = Franklin #5
2005 - #1 Marc Murphy; best player = Pendlebury #5
2006 - #1 Bryce Gibbs; best player = Selwood #7
2007 - #1 Matthew Kreuzer; best player = Cotchin #2... (Dangerfield, Taylor, Rioli)
2008 - #1 Jack Watts; best player = Natanui #2
2009 - #1 Tom Scully; best player = Fyfe #17
Times that #1 was the best player in the draft = 3/11= 27% (2000, 2002, 2003)
Times that #1 was not even in the top 5 players in the draft = 4/11 = 36% (1999, 2007, 2008, 2009)
Times that other players in the top 5 picks were the best player in the draft = 6/11 = 54%
Times that players outside the top 5 were the best player in the draft = 3/11 = 27%
Hird... The unflushable one is now... just a turd...

You could also make a serious case for Sam Fisher at #55, but apart from that it was a pretty shitful draft!Richter wrote:2003 - #1 Adam Cooney
Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
It is a win-win situation though (so long as we use that 1st pick very, very wisely).
Makes you salivate over the potential quality of the young mid we'll pick up.
Failing to secure future power forward of the competition Tom Boyd, we get (possibly) the 2nd or 3rd best midfielder in the draft.
In theory...

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Yes very excited by the potential. I am sure that Pelchen will also look for strong leadership qualities (Judd like) and will be careful of strong "go home" factors like with Aish. I remember that Geelong had a very bad year under Bomber Thompsen and picking up some great draft picks (Selwood?) before rebounding to its now dominant position. If only we could do that.
