Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
So this years draft we're looking at pick 3 - 5 it would seem.
With a pick in the top 5 and in desperate need of young midfield talent.. asap.
What happens I ask, if Tom Boyd (likely #1 draft pick future power forward of the competition) slips through to us?
Would you take him?
Would Pelchen & co. consider it? Having made our desire for midfielders known.
We have Lee and White waiting in the wings..
1 of the 5 best young midfielders in the land, or the sort of player you can build a whole team around..
It's a tough one.
Love to hear your thoughts

Best available with first pick no matter what type of player..
Then mids with the rest of the picks.
Then mids with the rest of the picks.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Best player available at our pick is usually the line vomited out by most clubs. I tend to agree, particularly the first few picks of the draft.

Keep it simple and just take the best player available.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
I'd take the gun power forward no doubt. While we do need elite midfield talent badly, the wraps on Boyd are that he will dominate the comp and would be a player we could build our next good side around.
With that said, I don't see how we could possibly fit McEvoy, Hickey, Stanley, Lee, White and Boyd into the team, not to mention Siposs and Markworth. So it wouldn't surprise me to see us pass either. My solution to that would be to trade Hickey and have Stanley as the second ruck, while I'd guess only one of Lee and Markworth will make it.

That's what the free agency and the trade period is for..PJ wrote:Despite the fact we have no key defenders.LTN16 wrote:Best available with first pick no matter what type of player..

Still think with lower picks we could grab someone or two to develop as KPD
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
IF Boyd is available you take him - KPP do not come around that often - look at Bulldogs took Griffin at 2 instead of Roughhead and Franklin and look what happened there.
You can always trade KPP if you have too many and they hold more currency. Roo has a couple years left , Kosi gone Maister stop gap , MCevoy and Hickey Ruck solution for next 8 years. Siposs and Markworth not KPP too small. Stanley - I like at CHB and free agent Brown FB. Lee can be second KPP forward.
That said I think he goes no. 1

my thoughts exactly.stinger wrote:if boyd was still available at our pick....and he won't be....you would take him without a second thought......
however sitting through our last few drafts & hearing the names many fancied never called & just the complete unpredictability of it all... It's got me thinking on this one.
if he is still available at our pick, my heart will be firmly in mouth till he's called.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Boyd will go 1 and as it is not a strong draft for 18 yeral old tall defenders no doubt we will take a quality young mid. As recruiters are conservative I think we will end up taking Matt Crouch from the Rebels. If it was up to me I would be taking Boomer Harvey clone Lewis Taylor from the Falcons. This kid is a jet, elite ball user and like Harvey you can't lay a hand on him. He also loves a goal which we need. As I said recruiters are conservative and worry that taking a small mid won't pan out. Much safer bet for them to take a bigger sized mid. Hopefully this is not the case.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
We are in a win win situation, Boyd with lee, white, siposs, markworth make for an irresistible forward line.
But we need mids too aish, dunstan, crouch, Kelly , sheed and the list goes on. Good year to be down.
For me has to be Boyd if there followed by aish or dunstan!

Boyd is meant to be a power forward. Those are rare to find.Cairnsman wrote:Even if there is Roo mark two available?Buckets wrote:You take Boyd every day of the week!

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
I think a more interesting question is if we get our teeth into Taylor Adams from GWS... would we be prepared to give up our pick 3 for Adams and pick 10?
Hird... The unflushable one is now... just a turd...

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
With a Top 5 you take BEST available.
Normally at that level there is still a big difference...you just go on whho you rate as best.
Depending on the strength of the draft, after ten-ish or so it is a lot more blurred and you may start to be influenced by role.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Dunno about that. The same year the Dogs took Tom Williams ahead of Jordan Lewis. Not a great call. The year after Carlton took Josh Kennedy ahead of Pendlebury. Probably a mistake - though they'd love to have either right now.gringo wrote:I bet richmond wish they had Franklin over Tambling. Big man every time. Lee or Whitey as backs.
2006. Picks 2, 3, 4 and 6 were Gumbleton, Lachie Hansen, Leuenberger and Mitch Thorp. A couple of good players there, but pick 7 was Joel Selwood. 2007: Kreuzer taken just before Cotchin, McEvoy just before Dangerfield; both look like mistakes at the moment.
Have to say I'm not sure your rule stands up!
Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
That is like saying St.Kilda probably wish they took Judd instead of Ball or Bartel over Clarke.

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
How many clubs have activated their compensation picks for this years draft ?
Will any of those compensation picks be used before the pick we finally end up with ?
Will the club trade away our first pick....again.?

Re: Draft Question - the Tom Boyd Scenario
Maybe we could trade pick 3 and a senior player for pick number 1?
Then we would definitely get Boyd....!
Note haven't seen this guy play.
