It's odd that the place where this pent up society frustration boils over is at the footy - like its the last bastion where "any behavior goes"

AFL have been negligent in this area IMHO. Setting the standards for what is acceptable behaviour should be an ongoing and important AFL intiative not something that's largely done on the back of winning kudos for supporting indigenous Australians (which is sorely needed) but this issue is even broader than that.

Its a disgrace that publicly, weekly a player is labelled a rapist and nothings done to even stand up and say this isnt on.

Where's Eddies outrage for that?

Feel for Milne and his family - was at the G a few years ago and I reckon there was a crowd of 20 Geelong supports chanting "rapist" and comments of the like ......surrounded by kids in the area I left utterly disgusted and dismayed it could be allowed and the so called "peoples ground" allowed that level of abuse to go unchecked.

This should be Milnes last year - he has been a tremendous and loyal Saints star and his behaviour and response in the face of years of this cr@p is something I applaud him for.

Can you imagine how his kids feel hearing this trash????

Totally agree that continually calling a guy a rapist as though it's perfectly fine is way over the line. Totally unacceptable for people to be demonstrating to kids that this is ok. And the Footy Show making a celeb out of that Filth supporter and not condemning her for calling Milne a rapist - that just shows the level the Footy Show is at and how mainstream abuse is. The Footy Show is bogan culture dressed up in suits and validated because it's on commercial TV.
But abuse is everywhere. You only have to spend a few days on this forum to see how accepted it is to abuse, vilify and personally attack others. Can't see the point of it myself. It only creates more of the same.
Abuse and personal attacks aren't going to stop any time soon, but awareness of racial vilification started with Nicky Winmar 20 years ago and perhaps Milney has set the ball rolling with a broader awareness around what's acceptable sledging and what isn't. Certainly hope so.

You are right.. everyone that I have met who doesnt follow the saints always say the same thing when I mention Milne as one of my favourite players... its generally comments like " oh, the rapist" or "Typical st kilda rapist' I even had one ex work colleague (during 2010 grand final week 1) who is a filth fan, say I hope you lose and milne gets rubbed out the dirty rapist........ Needless to say she didnt realise that I was being promoted to her boss the next week and made life difficult for her to the point where she resigned..... I gladly accepted it

I still remember the last away game against the filth I went to at the G in 2010. There was a filth fan holding a baby and calling Milne a rapist. I turned around and I asked him if he was sure and that there were defemation laws against saying that type of thing but he just nodded and said, he is mate, he is.

I have heard plenty of people refer to out team as "the rapists", cheery stuff.

I'm not really one to defend a footballer over such allegations as I have no idea what happened.

The point is I guess is that regardless of what you think of someone or what they might have done, some terms & language are just not acceptable in a public space, particularly with a large amount of children around.

I'm not too keen on taking my kids to an Essendon game and having to explain what their cheer squad is singing. Forget it.

Reminds me of a Rchmond game two years ago when the d######d behind called Gwilt "Jemima" He may have thought

I said the feeling towards Milne won't change while he brags about giving lip to the crowd and players.
