O'Brien denies using homophobic slur

Collingwood's best-afield defender Harry O'Brien has been forced to deny using a homophobic slur against Geelong's Tom Hawkins in the Magpies' upset win on Saturday night.........

"Just to clear something up..Id never resort to a homophobic slur..for those wanting to know, I said fat f$k..simply some onfield banter," O'Brien said on Twitter late on Saturday.

"there was a lot of passion in that game & things did get heated...there was 2 way banter...Just what you expect in the heat of the battle."

Oh the irony.... the irony

Yeah but giving a s*** about gay people is so last year. This year the AFL has a new minority to pump up. Well they haven't got any more so they are patting them selves on the back for Nicky Winmar's bravery by using his image and not giving him jack.

The AFL are so cool the way they look out for the little guy.

Harry is a first class clown. Ducks his head in marking contests continually. Last qtr GF1 when the heat was really on and again last night. Commentators don't say a word. Good player when it's on his terms. Let's himself down too often. Josh Hunt like.

Not condoning what Kosi did to get rubbed out but I am really amused at the usual stunt put on by Collingwood by using the media to get Jolly off. Nothing like a good old pot and kettle situation developing. Where is your twitter post today Beams?

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Lets just say that Hawkins was gay and it was common knowledge. And he was sledged about it by O'Brien right?

So Hawkins would mostly turn around and call O'Brien a black piece of s*** or worse, as you would.

So who'd be in trouble? Both of them? O'Brien for starting it?

Interesting

O'Brien is a first class flog. I dont care what the Filth spin squad has told him to post on his tweeter or twatter or whatever page I have no doubt he used a homophobic slur. Even stupider after AFL hitched its wagon to the IDAHO cause. But, as usual, bugger all will happen to him because he plays for Collingwood

I'm sorry, did you just say it is ok to be racist if someone is homophobic (as you would)?
I'd imagine most people are bigger than that, would call them a f***wit and report it.

No, i didn't mean it in that way. Perhaps, 'as you might' I should've written. In the heat of the moment, you may go for the worst thing to say if you were really pissed off about it. Its happened before.

if i recall correctly it wasnt O'Brian who pointed the finger at milne for calling him a homo it was the umpire that took exceptiong to the comment and reported it (after giving a 50m penalty) ...

Eddie called it harmless banter this morning. Amazing how its harmless banter when one of his players does it.

Ah but if you call someone a f**wit, then are you not discriminating against them on the basis of their intelligence? AFL players cannot vilify others on the basis of their race (and rightly so). AFL players cannot vilify others on the basis of their sexuality (again rightly so). Why is it ok to call them fat or stupid ? If a player was fat, stupid, black and gay, why is saying that only offensive in the cases of color and sexual orientation ? And don't even get me st[/b]arted on mentioning someone's mother/brother/sister/child/wife ....didnt someone get off a striking charge using that as a defence ( he said he was going to shag my mother or something similar ) ! . .

Dont get me wrong - I realise the only way to do this is to disallow ALL personal abuse between players - god forbid we lose the ability for "harmless banter" that is so crucial to the character of our great game ....we dont want to be seen as some sort of girls sports (oops I think I just crossed a line), or some sort of nancy game (again). Its not turning into BASKETBALL is it ?? ( is there something in the rules about slagging off on other codes ? - what if the player being targeted had a mixed race, fat, gay, stupid brother who used to love basketball ? )

my solution is that players cannot speak at all during games - to each other, the umpires, the crowd .....just silence ....oh and the crowd need to shush too ..

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Perhaps his old mate the Dalai Lama told him to say it.

:D

But you forgot he had also booked himself into meet Barack Obama, but even Eddie couldn't pull that string.
