Has Stanley ever even kicked any goals in the VFL?

If you cant kick goals in the VFL how do people think hes going to kick some in the AFL?

Spencer White is more of a goalkicker than Rhys.

People seem to think because hes tall, blonde and fast then naturally he should replace Roo.

He is a different beast to Nick and his own man. Cant he be the next Rhys Stanley. Its totally unfair to expect him to be the next Nick Riewoldt.

I think he's more Tippet than Walker like. Kosi more than Roo. Those types can be hard to place- Josh Frazer and Cruiser come to mind. Too good as bash and crash rucks not dominant forwards. I think the backline is perfect for him.

Made a number of spoils, (which don't get noticed), and got caught one-out with the game's premier forward.
Hardly a disgrace for a 30-gamer.

Still learning to use his body, and should be watching the ball more than the man in marking duels. Still think he would be better on the forward line.

Stanley has done some very good work at FB this year. Give him 12 games there and see where he's at. He lends us so much donw back what we need: height, pace running out of D. Ferguson any closer to a game?

As I said in another thread, the smartest thing Stanley can do is have a good look at videos of Dustin Fletcher and learn from it. He is a similar body shape, and Fletcher has been one of the best in the business.
Needs to learn to use his better reach and speed on monsters like Cloke, if he does that, he will be very good.

27 games...and only a few as a defender

Stanley is going very well. You do not become a key defender overnight. Yes he made the rookie mistake this week of watching his opponent too much, and lost track of where the ball was. But he will have learnt from it.

Even if Stanley does not stay a key defender, playing there this year will teach him a lot.

However he is showing all the signs that he could become a very good defender.

Leigh Marthews suggesting he'd persist with Staey down back as he has all the attributes in a modern day key defender you need - speed, height and a booming kick.

But he'd know less than Big Marto.. FFS he's played 4 games down back...he needs to learn how to apply his body shape to the role (Hudgton wasn't a monster full back) and he did ok.

I'n not sure Brown is the answer to be frank.

What I would like to see is Stanley encouraged to use his pace from defense.... take a run occasionally and become offensive in the role.

With amount of inside 50's that Collingwood had compared to us Rhys did really well. Watch the replay again he repelled heaps of entries. For the amount of time he has spent in defence he is really doing a great job. Him and Roberton have been an absolute find this year, unexpected in fact.

Would suggest a bloke like Max Hudgton could isolate 5 video snippets and teach him a bucket load.

Hudghton woyuld have had five kicked on him tonight. No chop out, at the end.

Would prefer stanley ruck/forward but we have no backs and why would Brown be the answer. He's not young and is struggling to get a game behind 3 players at westcoast

Yes FB's can be gorrilla's, but there are other models too.

Stanly has already shown that he is a very good and natural spoiler. He has great pace, a huge vertical leap and is very athletic.

His problem wit Cloke was not so much the body on body work, but rather that he made the mistake of losing where the ball was.

We saw that with Zac too. Mainly Zac was a good fall back...but sometimes he had a brain-fade and watched his opponent without watching where the ball was.


Roo as a key forward is a master of working his opponent over till they watch him, and not the ball...and the moment they do Roo is off in the direction that gives him the opportunity. Unfortunately for Roo most of his team-mates then waste all that hard work by kicking to his ankles or over his head.

As discussed he should be looking pretty closely at fletchers game I would think - I really like his run and even more surprisingly his long accurate kicking from the backline
