Has he changed his name from Goddard to Goldard yet.

If we accept that Goddard did love St Kilda and misses his mates who he played alongside for a decade - both propositions I find to be likely - then it stands to reason that he has sold out his mates either for more money, or for more success. And that he feels bad about that choice.

He knows that many players before him stayed in similar circumstances - Hayes, Harvey, Barker. Not to mention plenty of others at other clubs - the current Geelong list for starters. With Ball, I found it easier to understand him going as Lyon clearly didn't value him, but Goddard was valued by Watters. it's silly to use figures such as $500k and compare it to what price people on here would put on loyalty. That's less than a year's salary for Goddard, over 4 years. He chose that cash over staying with his mates, and over probably captaining our club.

Sure, he's sad he isn't a Saint any more, and sure he misses his mates. No doubt he also realises that he gave up the chance to captain his club. But the emotions that bubble over, the ones he can't consciously admit to, are guilt and shame at the fact that in a game that is all about putting the team above yourself Goddard made a decision which was about himself and only himself.
I second that too. Ask Luke Ball how he felt after winning the premiership against his old mates. Would it surprise if he answered with something like "empty" or "hollow". I watched him closely after GF2 and he looked lost.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between 3 years and 3 years and a 4th with terms?

I just don't comprehend the risk, at all.

You get paid according to your output?

Fact is, one guy decided if BJ stayed or not, and everyone is now pretending he made the right decision.

I said at the time and will continue to say it. We knew where the club was at and didn't want to keep him at the price he wanted and as we drop down the ladder I completely understand the clubs position

P66 is right. SainterK you keep simplifing the Goddard situation. There was a lot more to it than how you see it and right now it has been a win-win situation. What good would Goddard be to us where we are right now. His salary would have just have chewed up money that could have been spent on developing other players.

I'm not pretending at all… if you take the emotion out of seeing a favourite son in the wrong jumper, we will be far better off in 5 years for having let him go.

If BJ had of stayed, we would have most likely lost Montagna. As much as everyone doesn't rate Joey, he probably cost us half, with similar output, also freeing up massive salary cap room.

We've got some tough years coming up, regardless of whether BJ had stayed or not. However in 4 years, instead of a 32 YO on $6-700,000, we have 3 blokes hopefully entering their prime, even if only one becomes a good player, we will be better off in the end.

He may be exactly what Essendon think they need to win a premiership so can pay exorbitant figures, they are in a completely different situation to us.

B.T.W Was he that good last night? I thought he was good with a few flashy bits… 23 touches and 1 goal - is that really what $800,000 buys you?

What an embarrassment. How the hell does it make him a class act?

Sure, he has a right to feel emotional, but for crying (pardon pun) out loud, show some bloody restraint.

I can't believe the garbage from fellow supporters in this thread.

He left us for cash and now he has the temerity to openly sob over leaving us after his new team just tore us a new one.

Next time, just kick us in the balls whilst you're at it, Brendon.

C'mon, we don't need his BS sympathy!

P.S. Luke Ball can also throw himself down the sewer.

If footy is now a business, which it is, why do care, and show so much emotion...

The game is becoming farcical, if you treat it like a sport.

If you look at it like a business, it all makes sense.

Goddard and the clubs decision was with money in mind, loyalty and emotion was not considered one bit.

Why does anyone really care... It's not game it used to be.

Well said.

Long may he dwell on his decision to ditch his club and his mates.

I guess he has to live with it now.

Oh come on, we had the cash.

Roo is coming out of his immense 5 year contract (somehow that's ok) likely Lenny Milne Blake Kosi and others will retire at years end.

Was the wrong decision IMO, and nothings going to change my mind.

We had more than wriggle room, and keeping BJ did not mean losing Joey, come on now.

BJ was the perfect age to compliment the kids between 20-25, hardly an old man.

You keep guys like that when you can, and I just can't buy we couldn't...no matter how you try to sell it.

So if White wins a coleman or Hickey becomes the # 1 ruckmen in the comp, you will still say we did the wrong thing? No wonder you have no faith in Pelchen, even if he worked a miracle you wouldn't change your mind.

Joey has made a career out of doing nothing when the heat was on and riding on the coat-tails of a strong side for a prolonged period.

If it was a choice of him or Goddard, Joey - pack your bags son

There are some major differences.

Roo"s period included our GF window. When signed he was our No1 player

A new contract for BJ over 4 years would not have except maybe in the fourth year. Last year BJ was not in our best several players, let alone be our No1.

So in the circumstances of when the deal was done yes Roo's was ok.

Agreed.

If he has a problem with what he has done in leaving this club, apart from too fricking late, then if I was the Essendon FC I'd be booking him for a few sessions with their psychologist, because not only will our supporters give him hell for the rest of our career, but so will every other club.

BJ was good last night but he's not worth 700K a season over 4 years. The peptides paid too much for him.

Please don't tell me BJ crying last night means anything other than he is struggling with himself. He's just starting to realise the reality of his call. With a club in decline you need to make business decisions - BJ needed to settle for less cash if he wanted to stay with his mates and the club that he is a life member of. He didn't, his call and fair enough. No sinister plots, no personal vendettas just a decision that may or may not turn out to be right for him.

Firstly .... A bird in the hand

Secondly ..... I love how people jump on or off people .... Because of the jumper they wear

Ask every saint to a man.... What they thought of BJ last season and he would have been loved.

Now he's a prick.... Because he made a professional decision which was actually smart.

Some people on here are blinded by their feelings for the club, and logic and sense goes out the window

They can't be critical, and can't see past their own prejudices

Example
Luke Ball is universally admired for a reason, and above all other supporters we should realise what he did when he put his head over the pill in the jumper.... He did things for StK that NO one on here would contemplate.... Are we grateful?
Some bogans are not

And he was basically forced out by a regime that didn't value him as much as a competitor

Who was right..... Who has the premiership??

Essendon will be the beneficiary of someone who in my mind is a class act..... Don't give a F*** what comments are made.

I know he loved stk.... How, because I watched him play 200 games in the jumper ..... He showed pain in his heart with every loss, in fact wore it on his sleeve....

BJ. will always have time and respect for what you did at the saints but can't cop the crocodile tears from sat night. You made the call to leave the saints and your mates and now you must suffer the social consequences. You can't have everything. Talk about ANZAC spirit, you left your mates and supporters in the trenches for money and now you must grin and bare what comes with it, don't look for self pity.

What those "bogans" are ungrateful for is the way he departed. By knocking back a contract offer and publically nominating a single club, he left St Kilda, the club that drafting him, let him finish his schooling while paying him, which gave him the honour of captaining the club and paid him huge amounts of money while his body would not allow him to reach the levels required to earn that money, with absolutely zero bargaing power, ultimately costing the club Pick 30 as a minimum.

We don't owe any pity to either Ball or BJ.
