Well if thats the motivation then bring in a rule that eliminates ball ups altogether and there would be a 100% reduction in ball ups and play would just continue until it works itself it...

Ridiculous reasoning to bring in a rule that is very difficult to interpret and harder to enforce... And it will cost a team the 4 points one day, but at least the match will have less ball ups..

It was brought in to stop injury and to decrease ball ups which is good for the game. We still want some stoppages and now it seems we have just the right amount. I reckon it is fairly easy to enforce but will have the occasional mistakes as every rule does. if it was an older rule no one would care. Whats rules dont you like and why apart from this rule?

That's the problem, the mistakes aren't occasional, due to the ambiguity of it... Other rules which are ambiguous and lead too poor decision too often are the deliberate out of bounds, particularly when the ball is kicked 50-60m down field and dribbles out... The rule needs to be clearer, the player must make a direct action toward the boundry when nearby... It needs to be dead obvious, not open to interpretation...

A second one is the hands in the back, or forceful contact or whatever it's called. What is that?.. Initially it was said a player can use his bum, hip etc to out body... I think you'll find now with the interpretation that they clearly can't.. Body strength is a detriment.. It needs to be clear. Hands forcefully pushing the back is the only way to get a free...

I know I'm arguing interpretation, but that comes back to a problem with the rules, and their lack of clarity and specifics..

They should have a headline when an umpire gets something right.

I missed the massive headline about this yesterday. Also your memory is poor. Plenty said about the Hawkins point. Still brought up now and you can bet the obrien incident wont be brought up in 4 years. And was Milne reported? CFurly for a guy who played footy you have no grip on the game at all. I still want stats that tell us why the pies get the best deal off the umpires. What about Sunday curly? Had 9 less frees. You have a great imagination. Did you co write the Harry Potter books?
You're wasting your time P66. Curly, Gringo and a few others have a chip implant that sends a continuous message to their brains that umpires are always wrong and biased against us. Can't seem to see things any other way. Stats are irrelevant, unless they support their argument, then they are proof.

How many teams in 140 years have had an obvious point counted as a goal in a grand final where there was a kick the difference when the final siren rang? Don't forget they got another goal within 10 seconds of the following centre bounce. Schnieder jumper pull? Toe poke! More scoring shots! I agree there is no conspiracy, we are just plain unlucky. We wont even discuss the Milne bounce the next year.

Of course we've got a chip on our shoulder. If you haven't, I think you are the one with the problem. How much can we fricken take? Are Sydney a better club than us? I am so sick of hearing how good their culture is when with a bit of luck they have won 2 flags recently by a few points. They were a tad lucky. We were bent over and you know what by the football Gods.

Sobraz wrote:So it's a sliding in rule?.. What happens if a player is bent over, very low, and takes out an opponents legs??...

Bent at the waist, knees bent but on their feet, and a player standing front on is collected??

So many grey areas... So much over officiating..
i dont know what you would call it but Id call that a bump

Fkn umpires are making the game unwatchable....they pay soft frees when suits then let players throw the ball all day

Even the Jimmy Bartell free to win the game (North) was wrong...have a look, the North player tacked fair - Jimmy forced himself forward and the North player did not cannon into his back but landed on his elbows. Should have been free against Bartell for not trying to get rid of the ball.
The free north received to put them in front prior to this was also crap. The umps had another major influential day
How can you watch shtt like this.
Let the game go and only pay the obvious like the carlton collingwood game...a joy to watch because the umps let it go and did not influence

Why do they let it go in the finals but early in the year they're ruining the game

The Jimmy Bartel free was 100% correct.

Agree with you. I leapt about ten feet in the air screaming when Schneider had his jumper pulled back without possession, 40 metres out, late in the GF with scores level. Clear free kick.
The bounce through point that nine times out of ten would have sat up nicely for Milney to run onto......the toe poke.......sigh........
All of that. I've been waiting all my life as well.....too young to remember and enjoy '66. Old enough to remember '71.
Yep, no conspiracy. Still waiting....

I new you would see it that way Plug but the north player did not take him to ground and he did not land in his back.
Bartel was tackled threw himself forward and the North player stopped himself from cannoning into his back with his hands/elbows.

Bartel did not deserve that free...akin to soccer, laughable

don't think the number of ball ups has been a problem. I like ball ups. tends to mean that particular contest was a stalemate. can be quite dramatic when the ball is locked into an area of field when both teams are desperate for the clearance and it doesn't come out easy.
also, there are a number of reasons for the decrease in ball ups anyway. such as genuine attempt to get rid of the ball focus, umps letting the play go for longer, interchange bench reduction, throwing the ball up quickly etc...
another problem with the new rule apart from it being nancy, is that it will be easy to fudge. lean into the guy on the ground and fall over. piece of cake. it has lost its purpose I reckon because I thought it was brought in to protect players from getting slid into feet first! now we have all this crap that you can't dive on the ball (which is where it is going).
