Can we get Essendon back?
Heppell is out of contract at the end of the season.
After landing BJ, it's being suggested the Bombers might struggle to keep him on their list, particularly if he continues his current form and increases his worth.

Re: Can we get Essendon back?
Recent History suggests we are ZERO chance of getting him
The reality is he will stay at the bombers witha "secret" 3 way deal with one of the sponsers a la goddard.
Funny how there's never any " REAL" salary cap problems with the bigger clubs.

I think it is definitely worth exploring seriously.
And although it would be nice to have "revenge", that shouldn't be the club's motivation. It just so happens that he is exactly the type of player — in all aspects — that we are seriously lacking.

No Travis Cloke getting a five year deal with Channel 9 had nothing I repeat nothing to do with signing for Collingwood for 5 years.

Luke Ball did as well when he signed up to the Pies. What a bizarre coincidence.
Goddard will be in transport on huge money when he leaves footy.
Still we should push up his monetary value for them he will at least put pressure on the fringes then.

Why does everyone seem to rate Sylvia? I haven't seen that much of him but I thought he was just a solid B grader.Ralphy wrote:Frawley... thats all i want Maybe silvia haha

Re: Can we get Essendon back?
What made me laugh on the weekend was that BJ inclusion appears to allow heppell to play full time in the mid-field !
I wonder if BJ is upset ?

Re: Can we get Essendon back?
Unfortunately we can't get him.
We are stuck getting solid B graders from other clubs.
Only the big clubs like Essendon or Collingwood can pinch A graders unless you are willing to pay stupid money.
We cannot pay a guy like Heppell enough to come to us compared to a Collingwood.
We would need to offer 250K a year more than Essendon for his head to be swayed.
Collingwood would only need to offer 50K more, that is the difference.
Welcome to the brave new world of psuedo footy socialism.

Re: Can we get Essendon back?
Like the article said; Hepell will want a hefty pay rise and that could squeeze one or two players out. They seem to have heaps of KPP players. Any of them fit our needs? !!
NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!
Re: Can we get Essendon back?
We don't pay overs, that has been made very clear.
Somehow the club is under the illusion that people are going to come to our club for reasons other than money, in this new FA market.
The likelyhood that he would come for less purely because he really wants white with his red and black....is very slim.

We might pay overs if we can get a 10 player because then they can justify paying overs. There is no point in paying overs and giving a 4 year contract to a 27 year old. The more we struggle the more letting BJ go seems like the right decision.

That's not what they said though.plugger66 wrote:SainterK wrote:We don't pay overs, that has been made very clear.

They said they won't pay anyone overs under this new model that they speak of.
Just media fibs?
Re: Can we get Essendon back?
The club is trying to replicate the "Geelong model" where there star players stay for less than they could make elsewhere.SainterK wrote:That's not what they said though.plugger66 wrote:SainterK wrote:We don't pay overs, that has been made very clear.

The only problem is that this immense sense of loyalty to the club is only created through team success (meaning a premiership). Alternatively, the club can offer many perks and a great lifestyle that aren't strictly part of a player's payment.

But it may not be overs if a player is a 10 year player. And of course they will pay overs. Every club does. But they didnt and shouldnt for a 27 year old with form suggesting he was a 400K player.
Re: Can we get Essendon back?
Would be worth going for, in my opinion. We have salary cap space now, and could throw it hard at Heppell. Offer him a huge, front loaded contract, far beyond anything that Essendon can offer (whilst we still have the money to spare in the cap) to try and lure him across. There is no point in having free salary cap space for the next couple of years for the hell of it, and there's also no point in using it on old players who won't be there when we get our next crack. Someone like Heppell is ideal, and absolute gun who will be playing for 10 years. Worthwhile using up our free and otherwise useless space now to get him so he's still around when we have our next crack.

Sylvia has faded but a few years ago he was looking like a gun. A bit like BJ a lot of the disappointment comes from the fact that he was expected to get even better than he was and never got to the elite super star point. Injury and suspensions seem to have screwed him too.

Re: Can we get Essendon back?
You're probably right on that, we would have won at least one of those two games with BJ in the side, possibly both. But would we have won the flag? And if not, was there any point in keeping him and slowing down the rebuild? Tough call for the list management team.stinger wrote:what a stupid flowering comment re bj.....he just may have been the difference between us being 2-0 instead of 0-2 ffs.... dumb even.....
