Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
He averaged less than a tackle a game for his entire career so you must have a pretty good memory to be able to draw that conclusion. The G-Train wasn't exactly known for his agility and forward pressure - I reckon he was worse than Kosi in that department.sunsaint wrote:I remember how much was made of gehrig being the bench press king, and with good result, when he tackled, you didnt escape the python

Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
Armo's effort to 1/2 time was still better than what we got from the others in to GFs
though personally I have no issue with Mini's selection in 09... he earned his spot
in 2010 though... if u support that choice, then well his argument has no basis in reality

Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
Yep, he had a very good season - more than 14 touches and almost 5 tackles a game, kicked 22 goals and had 22 goal assists. Three weeks earlier against Collingwood in the Qualifying Final he had 18 touches, 6 tackles and kicked 2 goals with one goal assist. He never reached those heights again, but people forget how useful he was in 2009.skeptic wrote:though personally I have no issue with Mini's selection in 09... he earned his spot
Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
I don't reckon anyone disagrees about Mini in 09 he was very good consistently.

Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
Armo is probably at his best now- a very good and tough onballer, same for Steven, but not an elite midfielder who can run flat out all day. I was looking at our list and there's only one or two midfielders/ onballers who seem to have the four quarter tank- Lenny is one, maybe Ray and Jones, but really the rest can play great footy for half a game or maybe three quarters and fade for long periods and can't shift into top gear when needed. We really need another mid with a big tank, as there's daylight after Lenny. I see a few people going on about McQualter on the forums.. I believe he was a talented small who's natural game was ruined by Lyon, and he probably would have done well under most other coaches.
Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
I think Armo is perhaps our best mid ATM
Perhaps Dal?
Would be close, hard to say.... Dal is definitely the one tagged hard....

Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
Funny that Lenny has gone from one to 3 after one game. By the end of the year, baring injury i would expect Lenny to be ahead of any other mid in the B&F.

I agree and its a real worry, other than NDL the rest look like B graders at best including the younger ones. Caddy would have helped.plugger66 wrote:Funny that Lenny has gone from one to 3 after one game. By the end of the year, baring injury i would expect Lenny to be ahead of any other mid in the B&F.
Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
I thought Armo has clearly been the best mid in pre season
Dal was in 2011....at his age and experience, one would expect him to be #1 this is a guy who has almost won a couple of Brownlows....
At 33 I hope the old war horse doesn't have to shoulder the load and carry the midfield again. If Joey, Dal, Armo and Jack can't support him like Boomer gets supported by Swallow, Well, Ziebell and co... We are in real trouble.

Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
Armo just needs to work on his tank. That's the difference between him staying B grade and becoming A grade. He looked great for a half of footy against GC and was clearly the dominant midfielder on the park....The second half he cramped and ran out of puff. We've seen that too often from Armo over the last few years.

Armo and Steven have clearly been the best mids in the pre seaon apart from Joey but Lenny was injured and still did ok in the first game and like last year he will improve with games but you are correct, if our younger mids and even Dal and Joey dont take over or at least match lenny this year it is going to be long year because Lenny isnt improving and will likely go a little backwards this year.

Good call Plugger- you are better after a loss. I hope we keep losing just so you are in your posting element.

Well if I was honest....
Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
Jack will never be rated by me.. Until he finds composure with footy in hand. He needs to keep it simple, and work within his limitations.... He is fine in front of the goals, because it becomes a simple decision....
Both he and Sam G should never kick less than 45 unless its to someone 45 in the clear...

I think that will come- he must at about 50 games and you would expect that he will get a little more composure as he gets used to the speed of the game.
Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
6th year.... He's had long enough....
I was watching youtube highlights of 96/97 and 19-21 year olds like Hall/Hudghton/Brown/Cripps/Smith/Jones were excellent
We played in 2 night and 1 day grand final

Re: Club Fitness and Training Intensity
agreed but I wonder what a FF averaged in the similar eras, pre forward pressure game plans, ie kosibergholt wrote:He averaged less than a tackle a game for his entire career so you must have a pretty good memory to be able to draw that conclusion. I just did a quick check &
Lockett only avg .7
M Lloyd 1.1
B Hall 1.1
J Brown 1.1
I spose all that shows is big hulking forwards arent tackling machines, just dont caught by one (ask Guy McKenna)
& the point remains that he actually spent some time in the weights room

Yep, agreed. He was unstoppable in a wrestle for that exact reason. Not many of those massive guys left in the game with current gameplans though.sunsaint wrote:I spose all that shows is big hulking forwards arent tackling machines, just dont caught by one (ask Guy McKenna)

not that its massively different, but interesting to see we were a little behind on rotations for the game, in comparison most of the sides that won...
we were always quite focused on regular interchanges, could have been a reason for our running out of legs...
