2007-2009 Drafts
As mentioned in another thread 'Why can't we copy Geelong's model'.. It got me thinking about the drafts of the years when we were both on top.
People say we lack depth. We are miles behind Geelong.
In 2007 we only have 2 players on the list. Ben McEvoy and Jack Steven. Both are pretty good players. But the rest of the selections are long gone.
In 2008 only Rhys Stanley and Tom Simpkin are the only ones left out of the 13 people we drafted that year (if you include rookies)
In 2009 not one single player is left on our list from that draft year. Not one!
Also in 2010 we no longer have the top two round draft selections with us.
I think we only have 4 players from the 2007-2009 drafts from 30 selections that are still with us..
More money needs to go in recruiting otherwise what's the point having a football academy if our recruiters can't do their job properly.
I feel like we are going to be in a real dark hole in 2 or 3 years time.

Thanks noob for the post, but personally I think the thread should be renamed...I'd go with "Butters gift to the St Kilda FC?" or "Ross Lyons Legacy"kimberly saint wrote:Ad lovett on top that

Re: 2007-2009 Drafts
We should have a HEAP of money in the cap to be able to get some decent players to the club.
And just continue on from there...
Hope Pelchin is the answer, if not we have to get Geelong or The fifths recruiting guy.
All their kids are stars..

I remain unsure of what pelchens strategy is?
Which is ok, but I'm still cautious

i think he is looking to win a flag within 5 years. he's topping up the 21-24 age bracket whilst bringing in kids and plugging holes in the list.SainterK wrote:I remain unsure of what pelchens strategy is?

Re: 2007-2009 Drafts
I certainly blame Ross for getting us to winning positions with a minute to play in two grand finals. We have found out since that our performances then were not due to superior talent but superior coaching. He could have decided in 2007 that he needed to rebuild from the bottom with high draft pics (necessitating a bit of tanking) so that we might have a shot in say 2013/4. But for a fly kick, and a poster given a goal and a jumper held, and then a right angled bounce, everything would have been seen in a different light, even by those who are now blinded by desolation.

Re: 2007-2009 Drafts
We hang our hat on being in two grand finals don't we... If we won those, would we be the happy with the drafting disaster of 2007-2009
And exactly how did that poor drafting help us then and now?? It had zero to do with it.... It's like you're saying that drafting got us into GFs so it was worth it
That list was built from 1998-2006...... Except King taken for pick 91 in 2007 and the Schnieder and Dempster trades
The list management in those years never effected the grand final teams ...... It is effecting now.
Pointed out in 2009 and shot down by apologist many times

Re: 2007-2009 Drafts
That's not so bad. If a team drafts two good players a year on average then they're doing well enough, though some smart trading is needed to get another player or two. 2009 is the really bad year.noob wrote:In 2007 we only have 2 players on the list. Yes he is....
He has twice implemented a GP which has led to them being in GFs
The midfield rolling zone was brilliant. Probably the most radical GP until that point.

One minute his players were good enough to be playing Grand Finals and six months later judas was writing them off and calling it the 'end of an era.' ...only problem was that the media and our club and most supporters and most of his players had put him on such a high pedestal that the collateral damage was significant.
what a crock of effluent was heard oozing from RL's mouth in Round 4 or 5 of 2011. Imagine if all teams had the Rossco attitude...make it deep into September for a few years in a row and all of a sudden, you can kiss any success away for another decade. He doesn't have much faith in players or his staff or club administrators does he? Rossco can spend as much time as he like in his office..that's not gunna get you deep into September, and it's not gunna win u a flag.
The blueprint for team success is the playing list and the leadership out on the battle ground. The foundations were laid long before that pr1ck came to our club.

Needed key forwards and Hawkins who was the best in the draft was already theres. They got to take Selwood as a result. They wouldnt have won 07 for sure and 09.8856brother wrote:How was he gifted to them? He won them all 3 flags did he? Sometimes you need someone to put the icing on the cake.SainterK wrote:Clarkson won a flag and I remain confused if he is any good
Clarkson was the difference.
Right gameplan at the right time, with a an etra twist in the GF.
The cluster was worked out and so he has not had such an extra advantage since.

Re: 2007-2009 Drafts
Yap yap yap - you make no sense at all. Spend a few years thinking before you write again. In the meantime, perhaps you might like to get the first 19 games of 2009 and watch them and glean a few points about coaching. What Ross did at the end of 2011 is irrelevant to what he did from 2007 to 2010 and should not jaundice history in any way. That is the sign of a weak mind.Scollop wrote:You and the other sheep just listened to your messiah and believed his rhetoric and bs.perfectionist wrote:I certainly blame Ross for getting us to winning positions with a minute to play in two grand finals. Sorry, but while it is correct that that there was a foundation in place, Ross did:BigMart wrote:Correct
* help engineer some deft trades
* importantly innovated a gameplan that game us an edge
* most importantly had the team working with such blind obedience, and at such an intense workrate that it was almost perfection.
2009 was a wonder to behold, and anyone who believes that 2009 was not due to great coaching seriously has little idea about football IMO.
