But it’s not just the St Kilda listed youngsters that have McPhee excited about the year ahead with a number of graduates from the Zebras’ TAC Cup-aligned region, the Sandringham Dragons, also impressing over the summer.

Key to helping the youngsters succeed this season will be midfielders Tom Curren, Myke Cook and Marcus Marigliani.

Cook was outstanding last season, winning selection in the Peter Jackson VFL team of the year, while Curren was named the Zebras’ best and fairest.

But it is Marigliani who will carry the heaviest burden after being named captain, a responsibility McPhee said was in good hands.

“He’s a terrific leader, really professional and we think someone who will be a great example, both to the Sandringham guys and the Saints boys when they come back and play,” McPhee said.

“We’ll be incredibly young compared to the likes of Werribee and Port Melbourne but we think with the development in the Saints boys, the quality of our Sandringham players and the young guys coming through that we’ll be really competitive this year.”

Game venue and time have changed for the Sandringham v Geelong game this weekend

Please be aware the game venue and time have changed for the Sandringham v Geelong game this weekend.

The game will remain on Sunday 14 April but will now take place at Simonds Stadium at 1pm
The reason for the move is due to the condition of Trevor Barker Beach Oval which has been treated for disease in the grass and areas of the oval that have been re-laid are not ready for football to be played on it – Our next home game (against Northern Blues on 5th May) will still go ahead and our Round 15 game against Geelong that was scheduled for Simonds stadium will now be played at Sandringham.

Round 3 Port Melbourne vs. Sandringham match has been shifted from North Port Oval to Frankston Oval. The game will now be played on Sunday 21st April instead of Saturday 20th April. The game remains a 2:00 PM start.
The AFL Victoria Development League match Port Melbourne vs. Sandringham will remain the curtain raiser. The reason for the amendment is the unsuitability of North Port Oval.
