Re: The positive from tonight
Maister's efforts were good, Geary and Armo good
Otherwise very disappointing all round - including Dal (lost his Mojo last year and hasn't found it)

We will lose a lot more "winnable" games in our history. EVERY club does! ROUND ONE! folks! lets see where we are after eleven rounds before throwing the towel in!

Midfield old and slow Armitage and Steven tried hard but will never take the final step to genuine A grade midfielders >our youngsters look Ok but cannot see any game changers among them.Dal no leadership tonight at aall

If you can't take a loss (albeit a disappointing and unexpected loss) in round one, then you're not up for the long haul!

The positive from tonight is the realization of where we are at and the pain that we will be spared us due to delusional aspirations.

My thoughts were pre match if we won tonight we were still a chance for the 8.The Fireman wrote:The positive from tonight is the realization of where we are at and the pain that we will be spared us due to delusional aspirations.

Re: The positive from tonight
I saw some things I liked tonight, I thought that 2nd quarter was a higher class of footy by us...and unfortunately them. People wont like to hear it but GCS are going to be a seriously good side and are going to surprise a few along the way. I liked our flowing footy in the 2nd quarter, we were taking it on and looked slick and fast. If they can produce that for longer periods they'll go much better.

lol..you would have been deluded into thinking we could have made the 8.
we were way off the teams above us last year. I'm not talking about win loss or % banked on massive wins against crappy teams. It was misleading.
I still expect us to be competitive but the sooner we start re building the better.

Re: The positive from tonight
Of course GCS are going to be a good side. The AFL have assured this. So will GWS. They will both win a premiership before we do and alot of Victorian sides. They have first pick of all the young talent and special priviledges. This is what the AFL has become. Throw in all the stupid rule changes that actually impede the player going for the ball, and I am afraid I am slipping away from this game. At least in the 80's you could have some fun on the terraces and retire to the disco afterwards. As it stands now, the rich clubs are getting richer, the new clubs just get everything, and the not so rich clubs will tread water for ever and a day. It is not an even playing field, and people will soon get sick of it.Cairnsman wrote:I saw some things I liked tonight, I thought that 2nd quarter was a higher class of footy by us...and unfortunately them. errrrrrrrr? NO! get a grip for goodness sake! we got a poor result for poor play in ONE game! We gave up a winning position in round one LAST year (against a side tipped for the spoon) the sky didn't fall in then, and it won't now! I don't know how you can possibly "take it" that I somehow "enjoy being bent over and shamed" (a shocking analogy BTW) from me not wringing my hands in despair at the prospects for the SEASON based on ONE game! (and some people talk about the media dropping off us!) You have no idea of how disappointed and angry I was during that second half and in the immediate aftermath to the game. Do I think we'll drop down the ladder at seasons end after a round one loss? It's possible, after a performance like the second half one last night. There again, if we pick up the baton and hit a winning streak we could be right in contention! Who knows? I do know one thing, I'm not quite ready yet, to roll up the swag and give up on our prospects for the year.

Re: The positive from tonight
I hope the players are mentally stronger than the fragile folk posting here. In fact I know they are, you couldn't be a pro player with such breakable mentalities, you'd never get past junior footy. No wonder our membership is at a low ebb if all our fans are so fickle. We need fans made of stronger stuff I think.
We lost to PA last year, disappointed that we fell into the same trap tonight, but I've seen enough footy to know that it doesn't mean anything long term. We lost a game. I reserve the right to become more pessimistic if we continue to lose, but rather than be the kind of loser who takes pride in 'calling' our decline before anyone else had the 'foresight' to, I think I'll stay on the bandwagon for now.
Chin up, you bunch of bloody Fabergé eggs.
