I can't work out why this thread has been bumped but it takes me back. SS was not a place for the faint-hearted!

I note that I was down on CJ in those days but last year I found myself defending him against some of the same posters who used to attack me for daring to criticise him back in the "Ross Lyon is infallible" era.

CJ still kicks like a mule and his handballing skills are nothing to write home about. But he still gives 150% and his reading of the game and his understanding of his own limitations end how to mitigate them have improved. As AT was towards the end of his career, CJ is a useful player on the fringe of the top 22.

AT at his best was something else. I just loved the way he went at the ball!

I have always been A CJ fan and thought his strengths outweighed his weaknesses.
This was particularly so under Lyon where the game plan to succeeded needed above all else players who would work hard and do exactly what the coach demanded. For CJ Lyon arriving was a godsend, as Lyon was the perfect coach to make the most of CJ's strengths.

However the recent rule changes to keep the game flowing, and minimise scrums that caused stoppages combined the way umpires interpret free kicks against taggers and with the fast break tactics of teams at present favours players with good footskills , and pace.....and less so the disciplined role player that is great in packs.

CJ has the pace, but not the footskills.
He still has many good qualities, but if Watters just wants one tagger then he may go with Joey.

Armo's improvement as an in and under mid also places more pressure on CJ gaining a game in the 22 each week.

If you were "in the trenches"...CJ is the guy you would want next to you. Problem for CJ is that rule changes and gameplans are removing those onfield trenches.

Found whilst wandering through old posts my original rego of GoSaintersGo - 11.26 am 29.4.2005 and at the time the old Saintsational crashed and before re registering, I had the princely sum of 444 posts which should be added to the GSG bank of posts. The rego date should also be changed.
