Goddard hits back at Westaway

Post: # 1306303Post bigcarl »

STAR Essendon recruit Brendon Goddard says suggestions he held former club St Kilda to ransom over his contract are "a complete bunch of lies".

Goddard was questioned about comments by Saints president Greg Westaway, who said his demand for a lucrative four-year deal would have made the club pay him $750,000 at age 32.

"I don't think so. It would have been derelict of our board to have sewn him up for that fourth year," Westaway told Fairfax Media.

of course he did...he was a restricted free agent....if the saints had matched the deal the bummers offered him ..he would have had to stay......so he's come to the saints saying...here's what i have been offered by the dons....match it or i'm out of here...if that's not holding someone to ransom i don't know what is....he didn't have to test the market...or accept the dons offer...he could have just re-signed with the saints....but...all that aside...i'm still fond of bj....always will be.....

Was silly by Greg.

Towards the end, the story has it that BJ wanted to talk to the club about a 4th year with conditions and try to compromise, and Pelchen refused to meet...hence the negotiations broke down.

If we all knew the exact Date & Time he agreed to terms at Essendon we'd be able to form much more considered opinions !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

It's amazing to hear from Casper The Silent Prez.

He's the most invisible prez in the modern history of the AFL!

BJ would make a good politician.. a talk to the club re new contract with compromise and conditions = I want more money, and If I don't get it, I'll go to the highest bidder.

He has probably done plenty of good things off the field for the club but promoting the Saints in the media isn't his strong point and neither are his speaking skills..right.. he also says some silly things..right...like when he said after the draw that both teams should get a cup, right.. He shouldn't have said anything about BJ...or he should have toned it down...right..

Who cares - went to the highest bidder and Saints were not heartbroken to see him go.

Took 4 hours to reply on day one of FA. Basically said, here's your hat, what's your hurry?

Just concentrate on your horse tranq mates at Essendope.

Lance or James??

Goddard decided to leave the club not long after GF2. He sooked all the way through the 2011 season and put himself in preservation mode right up to end of last season. He is a pelican and good on Greg for saying something. He'd lost a lot of respect well before he left from what I understand.

Last night brendon showed exactly what his problem is. He loses composure under pressure.

As much as I liked BJ when he was at St.Kilda , with all his comments since signing with Essendon ,he has turned into a Flog !!To call Watters a hobbit & a dwarf lacks class !! Have no problem with him leaving for money , just be honest about it .

I think that's what most of us are wishing Westaway would do

I took my kid to get an autograph at a telstra store promo and he was late disinterested and surly all day. He got to Essendon and complained about how inexperienced they all were and bagged the saints. His diplomacy skills are not as good as his kicking skills. He is just a player who is in the justification stage - he is probably still regretting the decision and needs to tell people what he thinks will make him more appealing to both parties.

As fat ed pointed out this morning...this will happen more and more with free agency. Presidents will be asked to explain why stars leave.

They will have a choice to be factual or exaggerate though...

Greg was just razzing up the fans to be on the Saints side.

Did he say something that was incorrect? I wasn't there.

That we'd be paying him $750 at 32....not sure I ever bought into that personally.

One thing for sure, he won't play in premiership at Essendon- he might have had a slim chance with us

" I thought it was the best decision for me personally."

" I just thought I made the best decision personally for myself."

Says it all really - just screams money

Well it's either right or wrong. If he lied he's going to wear it.
