Not yet as he hasn't played a single game there.Junction Oval wrote:A fullback, he ain't.
Not sure why people are so deadset against trying it, I would prefer him forward too, but we have nothing to lose in trialling him down back, could give him some education for playing forward.
Injuries, he already gets them, so no greater risk there.

Re: To FB or not to FB
Yeah the guys massive.
Shouldn't have a prob one on one back there where his two biggest assets, speed and marking should come into play.
But
U never know
That might want to waste that ability

Re: To FB or not to FB
Surely if you take a forward (particularly one who ended the season in form and has had a huge preseason) and put him in the back line, you do have something to lose - a forward.dragit wrote:Not yet as he hasn't played a single game there.Junction Oval wrote:A fullback, he ain't.

Do you ever think before you speak or type?

I honestly think Stanley will struggle down back but im unsure you could say Rhys finished the year in form. He kicked 2 goals in his last 5 games he played for the season. Im pretty sure he will play forward tomorrow but if he is down back it wont really hurt as they practice games.

Re: To FB or not to FB
I am not sure stanley has ever really been in great form for the saints - he has been massive potential to this point - maybe the forward line doesn't actually suit him - a trial run in the backline in a practice series seems like a no brainer to me

Re: To FB or not to FB
Not sure what could be considered so thoughtless with my suggestion that it could be worth a try… I did say that I preferred him forward. Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Gehrig all spent plenty of time playing as defenders, which I am sure they would have learnt something from the experience. The Linton Street Flash wrote:Surely if you take a forward (particularly one who ended the season in form and has had a huge preseason) and put him in the back line, you do have something to lose - a forward.dragit wrote:Not yet as he hasn't played a single game there.Junction Oval wrote:A fullback, he ain't.

As far as I am aware it is only rumour at this stage linking Stanley to FB, but as we appear to have about 5-6 tall forward options and no genuine tall backs I can see why it might be considered.
Re: To FB or not to FB
Personally, I just think it's unlikely to work - I'm not certain he has the footy smarts to be an A-grade fullback. The best he could be is as good as Zac, which is to say physically reasonable but caught out of position at times. That would be ok for us, but if there's a chance of him being a dominant forward then I'd rather we focus on that.SainterK wrote:NAB cup is the time to try things, not sure what the fuss is all about...
But you're right, a couple of preseason games isn't going to hurt much, except the kid's confidence.

Am I the only one who thinks that Stanley just isn't likely to be up to it?

Re: To FB or not to FB
Has Rhys even had a good run at it, after being considered old enough as a KPP??
He's what?? 22/3
200cm
Not sure he was supposed to dominate games as a fwd even by this stage??
Fraser played FB out of necessity at StK initially (2001), the ball was in the backline most of the time..... But judging by his career, it was 95%fwd, same with Nick who played 15 games at CHB before going to his rightful position at CHF.
Merritt is a Defender, turned fwd
Croad and tarrant were under achieving fwds who went back nearly ten years into their careers....
Stanley is a fwd Ruckman, like Petrie, Kosi, Tippett, Ryder, Vickery and co

Re: To FB or not to FB
That may well be so big mart - but the problem is you can't fit 3 fwd ruckman into a team no matter how you do the maths and and key defender is hole in our list that needs to be filledBigMart wrote:Has Rhys even had a good run at it, after being considered old enough as a KPP??

b.t.w why is it again that you don't click that little quote button when you are directly answering them?
Not having a go, just curious as it can make things more difficult.
Re: To FB or not to FB
I hate quoting! Don't see the need?!
It makes replies ridiculously long and scrolling through pages of crap to see short responses is absurd. I think it's unnecessary and should be eliminated. Just MO....
People IMO are smart enough to work out when a reply or comment is in relation to there question or post...
P66 pulls me up on this one a bit, he's not smart enough to work much out I suppose.... And that also is a reason I continue to refuse to quote (particularly replying to his commentary)

Re: To FB or not to FB
Hopefully we are a better side to the one we had in 2001/2002
Which had Barry Hall/Fraser Gerhig and Nick Riewoldt
Possibly 3 of the 6 best power forwards of the era shoring up the defense......
Also
Give some credit to
Simpkin 191, Fisher 192, Gwilt 188, Dempster 191, Gilbert 194,Siposs 190
None of which are monsters, but better tall defenders than a Ruckman with 20 games experience.

Re: To FB or not to FB
Im happy to just see Rhys running around on a football field.
Where he plays seems like a minor issue at his age.
try him everywhere but mainly - just get him on the park.
