Re: If you earned $2 million a year.....
Maybe I'd buy this forum and ban those I disliked. But where would the fun be in that? And that would only amount to 1 or 2 anyway (You know who you are!) I for one get a worrying amount of pleasure from reading posts in this forum. It started slowly, but I'm afraid I'm addicted now. A bit like panning for gold. There's a fair bit of grit and shyte, but there are also plenty of nuggets (of gold that is). If I did own it, I'd seriously consider making P66 post 1,000 times a day, as a form of aversion therapy, the way some parents used to make their kids smoke a carton of cigarettes to put them off the smoking. But seriously, there is more than enough material to fuel a PhD in psychology on this forum and before you jump in, I include myself in that!
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Why would anyone foe anyone. IMO its a pathetic way of not being able to debate against others. And anyway most tthings said on here are in jest. Well I would hope so. Doubt many would speak the same to others in the real world and of course I include myself.

You can counsel me after you've done your PhD. I got sprung on the kids ipad looking at SS while away on the chrissy holidays. My wife cracked it when she realised how many posts I have made. I felt like a porn addict with a dirty secret. Didn't stop me though.

Delegation is a pretty good plan when you don't have a clue what to do! Would you rather she handed off the responsibility to someone who knew what was going on, or sat there pretending and maybe caused harm by making the wrong calls?White Winmar wrote:Absolute crap. She had been in the control room on the day, but chose to leave the wheel to someone else, because she didn't have a clue what to do.
I still don't quite understand why the boss has to be an expert in operational matters. Management and operations are completely different things. She's got plenty of people around her who are good at the everyday minutiae, if she's good at management then theoretically it could work well. (I have no idea if she was actually any good or not.)White Winmar wrote:It just showed her complete lack of competence through a lack of experience and knowledge on operational matters.

Re: If you earned $2 million a year.....
If you'd ever been at the scene of a major disaster, you would understand what I was talking about. I'm not trying to be patronising, it's just a very unique situation, that requires a unique plan of action and management style. Who would you prefer to be in charge when your life and property are at risk? The desk jockey with an MBA, or someone who had the knowledge and experience necessary to manage and lead effectively under that sort of pressure? I certainly wouldn't have the person who thought it even remotely appropriate to pop out for a quick haircut followed by a spot of dinner.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
Re: If you earned $2 million a year.....
No, it's a fair point. But the same applies the other way. When it's not a major disaster - which is 99.9% of the time - who would you prefer to be running the organisation? The guy who's great in a crisis, has excellent operational knowledge but is a horrible manager the rest of the time and oversees a mass staff exodus? Or the desk jockey with an MBA who makes sure the organisation actually meets budgets, keeps quality people happy and productive, and sets a solid strategic direction for the organisation?White Winmar wrote:If you'd ever been at the scene of a major disaster, you would understand what I was talking about. I know nothing about the situation or the individuals involved, but it's unlikely you ever get all those qualities in one person. So I'd pick the desk jockey as the boss and then tell them to delegate to the experienced ops guy in a crisis - which seems to be roughly what happened here.

Agree. it would be very boring. Some of the more outspoken posters usually have something interesting to say. Some of the agreeable ones are a bit passive aggressive IMO.plugger66 wrote:SainterK wrote:Why don't you foe em WW....White Winmar wrote:Maybe I'd buy this forum and ban those I disliked. I feel your pain, brother. I feel your pain. I outed myself to my partner as an SS addict. She just rolled her eyes and told me SS had better not replace her. That statement was disturbing on so many levels, it's hard to know where to start!gringo wrote:White Winmar wrote:Maybe I'd buy this forum and ban those I disliked. Re: If you earned $2 million a year.....
Why not cut out the middle man, or woman and just give it to the experienced person in the first place? I certainly understand your point about the excellent administrator with little operational experience, who is a great manager. There are plenty of examples of that in the real world. It's just that it isn't the case in this example. The findings of the inquiry into Black Saturday make that pretty clear.bergholt wrote:No, it's a fair point. But the same applies the other way.
