Abbott is not ideal, and Gillard is a known failure.
It's a bad situation for our country.
Is there time for Turnbull?

Unfortunately not, and I don't reckon he'll have the patience to hang around under Abbott for a couple of terms. The best outcome at this point is that Labor wins so that Abbott gets dumped and then Turnbull becomes leader for next time around.saintspremiers wrote:Abbott is not ideal, and Gillard is a known failure.

Wow Byron, I think your message/s got a bit tangled in all that, so I'm not sure if I'm about to address the correct point here...st.byron wrote:The odds IMO that there is some kind of interventionist being called God - (depends of course on which faith you follow - and did they all create the Earth or was it only the Christian version? Did Allah also create the universe? How about Rama or Siva or Vishnu and if so who's version? Not sure if Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith in the 1500's also created the universe) - called God who created the universe is totally incredibly ridiculous. Apart from ignoring all of the scientific evidence re the evolution of the species and the Earth, it's mind bogglingly absurd arrogance on behalf of an adherent of any faith to insist that their particular God created the universe and all within it. Did God create Muslims and Hindus too? Fair dinkum - astonishing nonsense. Next you'll be telling us that Noah's Ark actually existed.
Oh and the Seventh Day Adventists who believe that Jesus is returning any time soon and when he does there will be 144,000 chosen ones who go to heaven and a further million believers who will live as immortals for at least a thousand years on an unchanging re-formed Earth paradise, are they nuts? Or not? Doesn't seem any more ridiculous than the notion that God (and only the Christian one) created and is in charge of everything.
I'm not arguing here that any particular deity or deities oversaw creation. I am arguing that the notion of divine intervention is not irrational, nor even unscientific. This is especially the case when looking at the odds... I think that our own DS summed this up really well...
As for Noah's Ark, well I have no firm opinion, but maybe don't close off the books yet... the bloke who found The Titanic reckons he's now found 'the flood', and we aint' talkin' Rodney Eade... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/1 ... 73143.htmlThere are incalculable examples of our 'luck'. Enough to make even a hard liner like Dawkins not totally close off the possibility of intelligent design. An atheist friend of mine just the other day pondered the result of water becoming less dense as a solid, like every other liquid. Obviously the oceans would freeze from below and the earth would be a lifeless globe.
Even without calculating the infinitesimal odds of us as individuals being created, we all are equivalent to somebody winning the lottery every week for the rest of our lives. Whether that luck is simply down to chance or something guided from beyond our ken is a matter of personal opinion.

Do you mean something like the unscientific irrational and delusion fantasy of a deity creating... everything out of nothing...?st.byron wrote:Fairy stories.
"Well, something can come from nothing and that is what physicists are now telling us. I could give you - you asked me to give you a layman's interpretation. It would be very, very layman's interpretation. When you have matter and antimatter and you put them together, they cancel each other out and give rise to nothing. What Lawrence Krauss is now suggesting is that if you start with nothing the process can go into reverse and produce matter and antimatter. The theory is still being worked out. It is a very difficult theory, mathematical theory." - Richard Dawkins.

I think that 'centralised theme' is a bit harsh Byron(?) The problem is that a religion may (or may not) be started by a God/s, but they are run by (often very) fallible humans. That's the problem. But it's not just religious organisations that have that problem. So no, I sadly can't name you any religion were 'that doesn't happen'. But can you name me any sizable organization were ' that doesn't happen'?st.byron wrote:... People twisting beliefs for their own ends and power is the central theme of every organised religion in the world. Name me one where that doesn't happen.
How did you know that Stephen Hawkins is a rapper?st.byron wrote:Nice creationist rap Dave with a Stephen Hawking rapper.
Actually, that's some of your finest work there Byron! A mini master class in how to disagree with someone... with style and wit. Proof/posting to back up your sage advice over on the 'Groundhog' thread IMHO...
st.byron wrote:Crikey, the vitriolic insults on here sometimes just make me wince. Is it really necessary to be so abusive? i.e "I despise turds who slime behind weasel words. Like you." Not singling that poster out, just an example.

Pretty easy from behind an anonymous nic on a forum I suppose. But it just gives such a rotten feel to the forum.

Also IMHO, be it Noah's Ark, politics, faith v humanism... for me, ultimately what's most important can be expressed something like this...
"An alliance against a common foe - which is this massive social and moral decline that it seems to me we're seeing everywhere - that's where the future really lies, not in the glorified c**k fights that we saw on Saintsational at times. " - Scott Stephens, ABC Religion and Ethics editor

Nah Stinger, you're off the mark there. I don't really have SS allegiances against common foes. I suppose my politics being left of centre aligns me with people who are like minded but that's about it as far as allegiances go.
It's really just the ugliness of the personal insults that passes as normal on here. It's abusive, ugly and often really really unpleasant. i.e "I despise turds who slime behind weasel words. Like you." Would whoever wrote that ever actually speak to anyone like that? Maybe in an extreme argument or something. It's just so abusive and it seems to be par for the course for number of posters.
And I'm really just saying that for me, it makes me think twice about being a member. Banter, confrontation, disagreement, arguments - all good, especially with a bit of wit. It's the grist of any forum. But the aggressive personal slander and abuse that actually adds zero quality or substance to any debate, it's just ugly and unnecessary.

Hey Dave. My rave was clearly unclear as I received a PM from another poster. Yes that's exactly what I meant by 'fairy stories'. To me the notion of intelligent design is a fairy story. Same as Noah's Ark.Dave McNamara wrote: Do you mean something like the unscientific irrational and delusion fantasy of a deity creating... everything out of nothing...?

And yep you're exactly right about religions being run by fallible human beings. And in that the central message of the teacher/master/god gets completely lost under a mountain of rituals, fancy clothing, dogma and personal power agendas. And nope I can't name any organisation I've worked for where personal power politics aren't playing a big role.
And your point about humanism and what's really important. We're on the same page.

Safe to say that the only reason they still prosper is because of lawyers, and more broadly, a legal system which says that those with the most cash get the most "justice".stinger wrote:those pricks were banned once in victoria...it should have stayed that way.......evil bastards....imhfo...bergholt wrote:Serious? You have to remember that adhering strictly to a religion means you need to justify your irrationality by adding in an irrational hatred of other religions. They're all arbitrary so the only way to make yours seem less arbitrary is to close your mind to it.St Igmata wrote:Still laughing.
