Buddy contract talks on hold until end 2013
Per afl.com.au
At the end of the season, he will be a restricted FA.
Reportedly has been offered $1M a year over 4 years.
So Sainters:
(1) Do we want him (given we now have superstars Stanley & Lee)
(2) How much should we offer? Should we offer 4 years to a 27 year old in 2014??
(3) Do we have space in our cap to offer possibly MORE than $1M per year?
(4) Would we need to offload someone to get him??
Tricky issues at hand.
Given he is a marquee player you'd have to have a real good look at it. Rooey's marketing value is lower now than it has been for years, and Buddy gets bums on seats. We need the money he would bring in.
BUT Buddy alone will not win us a flag in the next few years. I'm convinced about that one given our development phase.
I'd love the $$$ he'd bring though if we got him (sure, the cost is high).
Really torn as to a yay or nay at this stage....

Wouldnt get him unless we think we can win a flag within 5 years. I will reserve my judgement on that after we see how the young guys go this year.

Possibly cost Hawthorn the flag last year. Seven kicks at goal for 3.4.
Lockett would have kicked 6.1 or even 7 straight, particularly in a Grand Final.
He's a wonderful player but he has his flaws

I'd like him in a Saints jumper… on his day is absolutely unstoppable.
Can't see us finding that sort of money for one player though, I reckon he'll just re-sign with Hawthorn after a lot of huffing & puffing (hopefully of the de-stabilising variety)

Nathan Burke said we would be in the market for a FA. I would take him in a flash.

I wonder who the next saint will be to jump on the merry-go-round ?
Do we have anyone worthy ?

Would be against what Scott has said the Saints model now is, he doesn't want anyone on overs.
Not convinced we'll land a big star...

No need, we've already got the next Buddy.
I guess two couldn't hurt.

I'm thinking that the filth could still grab him.lloyd21 wrote:Freo.
They don't seem to be as restricted by the salary cap as the rest of the comp.
Re: Buddy contract talks on hold until end 2013
He will go over to W.A because thats where he can score the best shard
Re: Buddy contract talks on hold until end 2013
Would love him, but like what others have said would go against what Scott's trying to bring in. I'd say would only leave to go back to WA

Yeah I think Freo would be strong contenders to pick him up. His best mate Wellingham is back there and the family pull is always an issue - so lets hope Freo pay some ridiculous amout to get him!saintjake wrote:He will go over to W.A because thats where he can score the best shard

He's been destined to be a Wharfie for quite a while I hear.

My mates from WA one who's dad used to be a board member says that he's already as good as signed at Freo on massive bucks as a restricted free agent- he's also an optimist wen it comes to Freo so who knows. Bad for the hawks though.

Would be a handy replacement for an ageing Pav. They are cashed up now and will be well and truly in the FA market.WinnersOnly wrote:Yeah I think Freo would be strong contenders to pick him up. I seem to remember Lockett missing a set shot from the goal square in 1991, playing our first final for fifteen years. He kicked 9.5 that day, if he'd kicked 10.4 I reckon we would have won the game.bigcarl wrote:Possibly cost Hawthorn the flag last year. Seven kicks at goal for 3.4.

If that thug Ablett hadn't maimed Burley and Granty before half time we would have won. He had 9 at 3/4 time by the way. Not a bad effort in his first final. Would love to have seen him tear a GF apart wearing red, white and black in 91 or 92.

No doubt, and as a ten year old at the time I hated Ablett for the rest of his career based on that sunny day at Waverley. Just saying that even big Plugger missed important goals, and that Franklin is still the best current forward in the game.8856brother wrote:If that thug Ablett hadn't maimed Burley and Granty before half time we would have won. This issue re Ablett needs a good airing more often.bergholt wrote:No doubt, and as a ten year old at the time I hated Ablett for the rest of his career based on that sunny day at Waverley. It was also in the days of a 2 man bench.
Anyway, Ablett had a good run in with the law. Karma's a bitch!

Re: Buddy contract talks on hold until end 2013
Put Buddy in a Saints jumper and the first thing that would happen is the oft rumoured third strike would suddenly become reality.
