Being of German heritage myself, I think it's one of the greatest pieces of comedy ever produced. My parents, who experienced WWII themselves, and their friends also thought it was hilarious.The editing of the major's racist comments misses the point completely. That is, using comedy and humour to mock silly old racists and the like. BTW, I thought only the major's bits, not Basil's, had been edited.

And those the yanks didn't pinch, were taken by the Ruskies. The space race really was a case of German vs. German. BTW, Werner Von Braun, the "father" and head of the Apollo space program and the head of rocket development for NASA, was a fully fledged member of the SS for the duration of WWII. Interesting what people will forgive and forget in the name of competition, especially when it suits them to do so.
