Blah Blah. Footballers are people and need to abide by the law.
Does your average Jo get 3 strikes?
If I blow over .05 @ a booze bus do I get another chance? (or even 2)
Worse still, if I drive home and admit to the Police that I was over .05 even though I got home safely do they waive it?

I don't buy Ed's feigned anger to be honest, this is playing out as planned IMO.
The timing of this drugs summit, called by the Pies.
Still reckon they've got wind of a massive spike in positive tests....
me thinks he doth protest when it suits...
something eddie DOESN'T Know ......
if it wasn't his team would he be on the front foot during his radio program chasing the story?
Remember eddie had a rape happen at his house which was apparently perpetrated by a known drug dealer and the party was a bit messy due to a lot of people being on E and coke. eddie might not be as naive about party drugs as he makes out. He would do a killer business if he sold them to his team though.

Re: Illicit drug loophole - which club?
70% is probably conservative for our club under the GT era. Not talking about in season, but out of season it was rife.cwrcyn wrote:No I don't think more than 70% take drugs, and probably not during Dale Lewis's time in the game. My point is that people high up in the the AFL scoffed at (and took offence at) the mere fact that Lewis said that players were taking recreational drugs. Lewis was a popular player who was in the actual AFL system and was in a position to make a call on what he had seen. He wasn't being mischievous, but responding to a question someone put to him. He lost his job for being honest. Some people keep their high paid jobs in the AFL for being dishonest.
Unfortunately, recreational drug use is commonplace among 18 to 35 year-olds these days. Why would it not be among AFL players, who have plenty of spare time and cash compared to most people their age? I'd day your suggested figure of 50% would be unsurprising within the AFL and is probably close to the mark.
Although I've suggested that Eddie Maguire has gone on the front foot because he knows his club has a problem, I'm glad that he and Gary Pert have done so, as it's definitely a problem across the board. Why was it reported on this site that Sam Fisher was in Thailand and not at pre-season training? After recent newspaper reports, that worries me.

Players don't get a second chance when they blow over 0.5.

These comments are very funny. Does your average Joe get tested at work and if they do the employer doesnt go to the police. And yes your average joe does get 3 strikes. The first 2 are a diversion program and the 3rd is a fine but they must be caught by police. Please dont make it about the average Joe because they arent tested.
Have no idea about the 0.05 thing. Totally irrelevent.

Gerard Healy last night said that according to his information 7 Collingwood players where on the gear over the weekend of their Prelim Final. If this is true this is massive news. Surely a much deeper investigation has to take place with over 25% of a team gaining an unfair advantage this can't just be glossed over.

If that is an advantage then I am completely lost on what drugs do to you. Could remind me of the advantage they get. You do realise he may have meant after they lost the prelim?

Taking a drug like speed is a huge advantage.

Not from what I have seen. There are many more disadvantages than advantages not that I have seen a sportsperson take it but I have seen every day people take it and there is no way their coordination would be anywhere near as good.

And they get 2 years out of the game if caught having speed before a game.

I played basketball and I had a teammate at amateur level that regularly took speed and talked about it and he said he got so much more energy to run out a game and was one of our better players when on it. We were scared he'd have a heart attack though- he used to get so freakin red in the face it looked like the veins in his temples might burst. it definitely improved his performance and was a better player by probably 50% on his non drugged state. They give it to kids as a way to stop ADHD so pretty much works as a mind stimulant to keep concentration high too. Pretty big advantage.

No it isnt because you get banned for 2 years if are using on game day or still in the system. No one in the AFL would be that stupid. Even Cousins wasnt that stupid so it is a disadvantage plus you then cant train properly because anything that goes up must come down. Still have no idea why all of a sudden someone is using speed before games though. Where is there any proof?

Re: Illicit drug loophole - which club?
I think I read/heard somewhere that Ben Cousins was tested something like 50+ times without a single positive result. I believe that was/is addicted to Crystal Meth (ice) and the tests at the time would not pick it up after about 6-8 hours. I also think that I read somewhere that testing has since got a whole lot better and he wouldn't get away with it in the AFL now !!mullet wrote:Did cousins ever get tested? Re: Illicit drug loophole - which club?
Lets not get the two different drug codes mixed up here;
The ASADA/WADA code tests "In Competition" and any positive test from this will result in an automatic 2 year ban. There is a list of banned substances somewhere under ASADA or WADA. (In Competition = Match Day)
The AFL, through their Pathology partners test for illicit (recreational) drugs and conduct these tests at all sorts of dates/places/times (remember Dane Swann whinging about being target tested at 6am). This is a voluntary code agreed to by the AFLPA !!

Ok, it's been quite a few posts and no further comment on this one...jonesy wrote:70% is probably conservative for our club under the GT era. Not talking about in season, but out of season it was rife.
Jonesy, I find that figure pretty surprising and hard to believe. However beyond the (perceived by me) improbability, I have no idea of the true answer/s... so I'm askin'...
How confident are you of the accuracy of that statement? (You can do the old on a scale of 1-10 answer if that helps.)
Recreational and/or performance enhancing?
What about the other clubs?
What about in the post-GT eras?
And Grant, if you are out there, do you have any comment?
