How long do you have Enrico?
Short answer is this. The Saints had been a basket case for approximately 95% of their existence (around 130 years). Our role was to earn respect, provide sustainability and become a seriously competitive - and ultra consistent - factor in the competition. These are all aspects that had haunted our club for over a century. We did not have the luxury to do anything other than set incredibly disciplined and high standards of effort, intensity and professionalism. This was agreed by the playing group early days and our job was to manage them to those standards. It would be hypocritical to espouse agreed values and behaviours required to change the culture and spirit of our club and then "off-field" take a "lets hope we lose" approach. We were not in the position to allow that as we were desperate to instil habitual standards. The other factor was that we felt the club had, for too long, lauded the individual and we needed to come together as a team and not be reliant on individuals. In essence personnel was irrelevant. Things like selflessness, integrity and effort were the mantra rather than people.

The Australian cricket team are taking this management approach to their fast bowling group. It's about getting the process right; building pressure, pitching up, allowing the ball to swing etc. The personnel is far less important if each member of the team delivers what is required when they are called up. The rotation policy has attracted enormous flack but, hey, you can't argue with the results. 8 fast bowlers used over the summer and still highly effective. Comes from management theory adapted from the corporate world as, I suspect, was the St Kilda approach you're referring to. Lyon adopted a very different game plan but benefited enormously from the culture of players willing to buy in. A strong legacy.

What if the playing group had agreed halfway through 2000 that it would be better to finish stone motherless last and get some quality players in? Would the job of the coaching staff have then been to manage them towards that aim?

Maybe they did, it was a pretty awful year for memory?

Is this not what Watter's and the club have just put into place with BJ?

It is utterly fantastic to have someone who has held significant sway at the club I love to accept and acknowledge our awful history and the problems we have had with lauding the individual. I share these views and was shouted and abused by almost all on the forum for years.

Thank you GT. Utter star.

How so?

FA dictated the worth of BJ, something that GT didn't have to worry about.

You don't sound very bright but I think GT is talking about something else. He would despise your posts in bagging players like Raph etc. I'd reckon he would think you're a twit.

The club put the overall list and restructure ahead of one players demands for more money.

I think you are being extremely naive if you believe that GT did not have to worry about StKilda players being offered more money and/or longer contracts by opposition clubs.

However one player that the Saints probably had the last laugh on was Cain Ackland:

Out of contract with St Kilda at the end of 2006, Ackland joined Carlton with the club's first pick in the 2007 pre-season Draft.[1] Ackland, who St Kilda had sought to retain, rejected St Kilda's two-year offer, accepting a three-year deal with Carlton.

FA just provided BJ with a means to swap clubs easily, just as the Blues PSD position did with CA.

Talk about making the most of a limited amount of talent! He actually played a lot of games for us in 05-06 but then across that three-year deal with Carlton he only played 7 games a year. I imagine he made a decent amount of cash per game, effectively...

It's really cruel to drag another Carlton misfortune into this thread. The team has had many over the past decade.

Carry on boys

Well he seemed to have a lot of BBQs. I assume the snags were probably high in fat.
