How many Gears can a headline make..
benefit or downside of having a surname that can be worked into a variety of sentences.

..Gearing up for more responsibility

Geary said the training camp in Colorado was a chance to demonstrate what was required.
"It was a really good opportunity. Not just to train at altitude but to get to know everyone a bit better and to show what you're about as well," Geary said.
Geary roomed with young second year player Jimmy Webster while in Colorado, relishing the chance to find out more about him.
One thing he did learn was that the camp was hard work for the youngster.
"He was in bed pretty early most nights," Geary said. "[It] took a lot out of him."
The camp took a lot out of plenty of Saints. Geary was fortunate enough, because of his training loads, to be one of 10 players able to escape participation in the team's final run of the camp. But he said watching his teammates endure the pain it induced was hard enough.
"It was actually sickening to watch them run," Geary said.
"It was one of those where you really felt for them. A lot of the boys pulled up and said it was one of the hardest things they have ever done."
But all 30 who participated managed to complete the task, an impressive effort according to Geary.
Although he found watching hard to stomach, you get the feeling he would have loved to be there alongside his teammates.
"Probably this pre-season, more than ever, has been one of our most exciting. We have got a lot of young players who are training well. All the older blokes are getting pushed by the younger blokes," Geary said.

No doubt if he does the paper will describe him as a vital cog.

No IMO...Con Gorozidis wrote:Can gears play midfield this year?
No question his commitment and effort, but IMO he lacks a few essentials and I'd hope his position is under pressure next season with improvement in other youngsters, Newnes, Dunnell et al, those with a better skill set..

Looking to shift into the midfield. Hopefully doesn't simply cruise along. Time to put the foot to the floor.

He has better than average skills, he's an endurance animal, tough as nails, disciplined, courageous. ATM he is way in front of both Newnes and Dunnell and he's only 24.
One of the more underrated players IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Gears steps it up to midfield

He'd be in the bottom tier at the club in skills by foot...BringBackMadDog wrote: Better skill set???

He's not CJ level, or even Gilbo (who has good and terrible days), but his quite a poor kick..

Which is why I'd like to see him have a run at being an inside mid deep in the guts....Sobraz wrote:He'd be in the bottom tier at the club in skills by foot...BringBackMadDog wrote: Better skill set???

Re: How many Gears can a headline make..
You have to be kidding me. Hes miles ahead of CJ.
There are two things
skills
and skills under pressure
im pretty sure most afl players have good skills. what separates the goods from the not so goods at the top level is the ability to execute under pressure.
the difference is often just a fraction of time.
as gears becomes a more accomplished player he will feel more comfortable with his time with the ball and his ability to execute under pressure will improve.
but he certainly doesnt lack the skills. just the time.
CJ has an awkward style but his short kicking is usually accurate. his long kicking on the other hand is pretty terrible.
but fair to say i believe geary will be a miles better footy player in 2013 than CJ in all areas of the game.

I think people forget how long it took guys like Joey to develop. Can be years before guys are comfortable with the pace of the game.
Joey didn't just rock up at 18 and start being awesome.

Seems suited to the small defender role. Valuable position and can't see an alternative.
Would like to see him stay there and get better and better.

Re: How many Gears can a headline make..
I've heard he's on the gear.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell
Re: How many Gears can a headline make..
I think he is too good at taking out the opposition small forward....
I doubt he will get a permanent midfield role, but if we playing a team without a damanging small forward, he may get a taste

Re: How many Gears can a headline make..
He engages well with team mates but it took a while for them to mesh. When he clutches the ball under his arm he seems to go up a gear and accelerate away. He's no V8 but he seems to put the pedal to the metal when he needs to. We don't have many Rolls Royces under 30 but a solid commodore type can still add value. When he gets on a run he seems to find a car park to move into. I worry that all the attention might go to his head and he will become a bit of a gearstick.
