Watters playing the kids is a myth.

The average age of our teams went up from 2011 to 2012.

Liked it better when wehad off field problems but made Grand Finals to be honest.

Yup - we will have a well behaved team full of "character" that is a MoR team for the foreseeable future.

Inspires me.

Would that be because the list all got older and that increased the overall? maybe also because we got rid of the average kids and replaced some with guys in their early 20s.

Don't remember making grand finals in Ross Lyons first year?

If we win a flag I wouldn't give a rats toss bag of nick dal santo was selling crack to school kids. Not for the first flag anyway. I'll get all high and mighty before the second flag.

So in 10 years time our average will be 37. Its simple. Our average went up because we still have bugger all young guys replacing guys like Blake because of pathetic drafting in 2008 and 2009.

To be clear, you are now comparing Watters first year to Lyon?

If so you will then be happy to predict a top four in 2013, 19 consecutive wins and a GF in 2014 and another GF in 2015?

Jeezus there's some horseshyte that get's coughed up into this place in the off-season (and the season for that matter).

What Ross did in year two isn't relevant. We had a different list and a different set of circumstances.

What is accepted wisdom is that no team hits its peak under a new coach in his first year. There is always the initial period of adjustment and asssesment that the new boss needs to go through, and then any major surgery to the list he needs to make generally occurs at the end of year one. In Scott's case, given what he inherited, I expect substantial change at the end of year two as well. The average age of our team last year reflects that the core of our team all got a year older and the few new guys that did come in weren't 18 year old's, they were in their early twenties. It reflects poor drafting in 08/09 era.

With Gram and Goddard gone, and Jones & Kosi both expected to be pushed out by youth this year then I would expect to see the average fall. Particularly if we get Tippett in the PSD and Blakey is running around at Sandy as a back-up.

In round terms, for every 28 year old (or older) that is replaced by a kid of 18, the team average age reduces by half a year. Gram and BJ alone (if replaced with youth) means automatically the average age will be one year less than last year.

Ross Lyon was the senior coach and was given a fairly liberal position with a lot more say over list management and footy department management. Pelchen was brought in to oversee the footy department because there were concerns that a long term plan was being ignored with little game time given to the kids. We had and an almost embarrassing track record in bringing in youth during his time. Geelong pretty much had a second list of kids able to fill the spots on their list and won a Gf with it. The structure of the management team at the moment is going to be a better thing long term even if we have to take a step backwards to go forwards.

Ross was pretty lucky to inherit an incredible list and fine tuned it to be ultra disciplined while bringing in ready made foot soldiers to fill holes but didn't seem to care about the future. Scott Watters seems to be a bigger picture guy and able to see the importance of the commercial side of the business as well as the onfield stuff.

A mate with family at Geelong claimed Brenton Sanderson was one of Geelongs biggest strengths and gave more credit to him for that GF than Scott. Time will tell what Scott can do with out him.

Sorry I only told what I heard that Scott was very strongly guided by Sando and that he was very happy to defer to authority in his first year.

looking back with the wisdom of hindsight i think its fair to say we would have been much better off if we had Ross Lyon coaching us in 2004-2009 and if Scotty/Pelchen came in to do the rebuild in 2010 ...
the last two coaches have all had differant roles - GT was great at building the team from the spoils of poor performance and was strong in developing the club and getting us off our knees ... RL was a master game day coach who if in charge of the Saints in 2004 would have been very sucessful but would have put us in a hole as he was not great at the draft or building teams ... my hope is Scotty is a blend of both GT and his ability to build a team and RL and his ability to coach it

GT coached us beautifully in 2004 and we got really close. In an ideal world, we would have had the coaching change in 2006 but that was never going to happen.
