if read carefully and competently you will note that I didn't actually mention Nicky Winmar myself as he's too far into the past. I merely responded to his name being mentioned. Though he was a champion player... there clearly were enough instances over his career to suggest that we didn't support him as well as we could have

I'll take the point about Lovett; clearly shdn't be on there.

Saying your caucasian players fail to whilst correct is beside the point. As has been discussed, different cultures have been needs and whilst there will always be hits and misses across the board, the fact remains that our recent record with Indigenous players has been really poor. With caucasian players we have at least some successes.

Again I just want to be clear. I'm not saying that we shouldn't draft Indigenous players, or take a more cautious approach to drafting Indigenous players.

Developing the Indgenous players we get is something we're clearly not great at compared to say a club like Hawthorn. It's an area we need to improve

Back on the individual, Dayle Garlett these are the facts:

Plays midfield/forward and is a left footer.

He is with Swan Districts (2010 Premiership champions) which have been a pretty good breeding ground for footballers. Not all successful but nonetheless.

He was kicked out of the AIS-AFL Academy a few months ago now and there have been no indiscretions since. In fact news in Perth has been quite positive ie knuckling down re-focusing on football, hitting the weights, part of the Swan Districts senior group etc.

I think he will be very well supported by the strong presence of West Australians at the club. Obviously that is not going to discount being homesick as we have seen with some players.

My belief is he is worth a shot.

I read somewhere recently that about 4-5 clubs have a specialist indiginous development coach/person,maybe we need to look in that direction going forward.
Any young kid relocating to a strange environment might struggle,also when no footy activities there's alot of spare time.
