Kosi or Stanley back?

Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
Time will tell, seems doubtful that Watters would be openly discussing tactical plans for 2013 b4 a list is finalised or preseason is underway so probably jut musing on his options and keeping us in the news a bit!
Maybe this year?
Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
No and no
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
Well for one, I said keep him away from fast leading forwards....I was only saying if he was needed to push back when say a WCE tried to expose our lack of height with say a Cox...why not try.saintsRrising wrote:For those proposing to play Kosi down back....can you please stop and consider what he is like in body on body work.
= even undersized players can push him over
For those proposing to play Kosi down back....can you please stop and consider what he is like on the burst.
= fast leading forwards would leave him well behind.
So given the above, exactly what criteria do you think actually makes him suitable to be a key defender?
It's not like we picked up a big defender is it?

Nah, I think you mean Tim Ellliot. He was our star defender in the very early noughties.saintdooley wrote:we might as well just bring raph back. if kosi is our only answer bring him back. and Fiora while we're at it.
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

He could ruck and push back but he could never play on an opponent, even a Cox type. His turning circle, pace and awareness are all poor. It would be good for Cox confidence but surely that isnt our clubs problem.

Put Roo back
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

I actually think Stanley could be brilliant in the fullback possie (height reach closing speed etc )even for a year>would maybe help him to be a more complete player going forward>I dont like to bag players but hard to think of anyone less suited to the full back role than Kossie.

Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
Clearly we can't fit Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Stanley, Wilkes and Lee into the forward line and we are short in the backline so unless we pick up a ready-made key defender in the draft someone may have to play back. With an extra pre-season under his belt I think it may have to be Wilkes.
The thing that now intrigues me is how we fit McEvoy and Hickey in the 22. One on the bench limits midfield rotations.

Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
He's actually not bad on the burst. Pretty sure he still runs 20m in under 3 seconds. It's not spoiling ability or body work that would really concern me, it's his total lack of agility and skills below his knees. I think he'd be perfectly competent in the air and wrestling, but once the ball hits the ground he's out of the contest.saintsRrising wrote:For those proposing to play Kosi down back....can you please stop and consider what he is like in body on body work.

Playing defence IS easier than playing forward, and Kosi would have most aspect covered adequately, but a couple of glaring weaknesses that could cost a lot. I think it's worth a shot - we have Roo, Stanley, Lee and Wilkes all looking to play permanent forward with McEvoy and Hickey having to rotate through if they play in the same side.
I'm not saying that we can sleep easy knowing Kosi has FB covered, but at least for taking resting ruckmen or unco gorillas, he could do the job providing his opponent is useless at ground level as well. We know he's a great pack mark too, would be handy when the opposition is forced to kick long to a congested goalsquare.

Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
I am starting to think Lee might have to go in there if he gets some time forward and fails to fire. He is agile, tall and good at ground level with safe hands. Wilkes is not a defender and might have to play forward if at all. Kosi is going to be struggling to get regular games next year unless he can get back to some form and would be a bit of a liability down back IMO. Hickey I have no idea about as a defender but possibility if we used Kosi or Blake as second rucks.

Re: Kosi or Stanley back?
Neither would even considered down back for Sandy. Stanley is a forward and Kosi is a hasbeen, or neverwas, whatever you prefer.
