The Saints ended the trade period still burdened by an average age of 25.7 years, despite losing the seasoned star to free agency.

It is a statistic that provides a major challenge for coach Scott Watters considering the widely-held perception that the Saints have slipped from the premiership zone.

But the durability and consistency of the club's top-end players, so close to the ultimate success in 2009-2010, have helped it cheat nature so far.

The Saints finished ninth this year, relying on the usual suspects and the exciting development of Rhys Stanley, Ahmed Saad, Terry Milera, Tom Simpkin and Arryn Siposs, but face a delicate balancing act despite Watters' impressive start.

They have been in the top three for age every year since 2006.

The average age figures, produced for Champion Data's upcoming Prospectus publication, underline a far more dramatic change at Western Bulldogs - a team vying with the Saints for a flag in 2009-10.

Official figures reveal the Dogs now boast the third youngest list as they start rebuilding.

The Dogs started this season as the fifth oldest team, but retirements (Lindsay Gilbee and Ryan Hargrave), de-listings and trades (Brian Lake) have re-shaped their list.

The figures were taken from primary lists as they stood yesterday, projecting forward with players' ages at the start of next season.

Sydney, Collingwood and Hawthorn, all in the premiership window, fill the places below St Kilda on the "age ladder".

if so please explain. if anything we will be become older relative to others given we wont be drafting many players. only raph might fall off the list. but undoubtedly we will still have the oldest list when the seasons starts. we have the oldest list in the afl. its a fact. get used to it. the draft wont change that.

Unlikely… every club will bring in at least 3-4 18 year olds… and I can't see us de-listing too many players that have contracts for next year.

Well of course it WILL change & will depend on who else we delist (Raph will obviously alter it) and depending if other clubs draft younger players or get some recycled players into their list- not to mention the delisted free agents period will just start & if a club takes players there then obviously their list will become older.

They've shown that you don't delist players simply because they are old.

If they are old and cannot play, then yes, move them on.

Also we weren't as far off it as all that last season. Had a few things gone a bit better (umpiring in two or three games and some luck) we'd have been right in the mix.

exactly. swans finished 5th/7th/3rd in last 3 seasons.

CJ/Blake/Kosi are a waste of space. And I guess this will be the last year for the Len-dog and Milney. So we will be much younger in 2014 and only have lost 2 good players. Point is we are carrying some old dead wood on the list who probably wont even play.
It could be said that we are a well paying retirement village and some people seem cool with that.

I disagree on CJ and Blake. They still have something to offer. The club obviously agrees on Blake, having kept him on for another year. Not sure what the thinking is on CJ.
