Re: The Pelican
You are absolutely spot on. Sadly. He has a fearsome reputation as someone who can get a difficult deal across the line but he failed miserably this time. No KPD, And a backline that will continue to flounder as a consequence. But how dumb, dumb, dumb are the WCE? They have got to be the stupidest football administrators of all time. They are kidding themselves into thinking Mitch Brown is a required player. Required by whom? for what? He is going to spend the best part of next season playing for the two's in the WAFL. He is also going to be an unhappy chappy to boot. And most importantly at the end of 2013 he is going to walk away from the Weagles and they will get nothing in compensation which is what they deserve. I mean he is condemned to being some glorified emergency in the event that Glass is seriously injured. While you wouldn't wish that on anyone, for Mitch Brown's that is his only hope of playing in the AFL. I just think the decision to keep him and not allow him to go to the club of his choice was idiotic. The Weagles are Wankers.bobmurray wrote:How good is the Pelican....

Fail to see how WCE are dumb. They kept a contracted player. We went after a contracted player. And if you think a player will care about that next year then I am surprised. He may play round one. He played 8 games this year and if he played well enough may have played more.

Re: The Pelican
Brown may be out of contract next year, doesn't mean WCE will get nothing for him… they will flog him to the highest bidder which will be plenty probably as nearly every club wants a decent KPD entering their prime… Hawks would probably give their 1st rounder for starters.
I am not convinced on Brown at this stage, so hopefully it turns out that we dodged a bullet… time will tell. Let's be honest, he is still unproven at AFL level. We offered everything we had, which WCE would have taken if Hooker would have become their back-up… not much more that the Pelican could have done. I for one would have been furious if 12 or 13 had of been used on Brown…

Re: The Pelican
It came down to Cale Hooker saying no to WC.
Simple as that. You can jump up & down & sook as much as you want but the deal was all but done til Hooker pulled the pin.
We tried. It didn't work. We move on.
Pelchen actually is very well respected & not the anti Christ amongst recruiters that some of you like to promote.

Not that good either as this trade period showed,,,only got deals done because we paid overs..Peake could have done that and he's an absolute dud..Animal Enclosure wrote:It came down to Cale Hooker saying no to WC.

Yes, Pelchen is overrated but so what. As soon as anyone is talked up they become overrated.

Who cares about what might have happened, he is judged on what did happen and in the end we couldn't get a Key Defender despite his Rep...load of bollocks..no wonderBigMart wrote:Didn't want to entertain Gilham??

Re: The Pelican
Peake was a National Draft recruiter & didn't do trade deals. Just as Tony Elshaug wasn't involved in the dealing this year.bobmurray wrote:Not that good either as this trade period showed,,,only got deals done because we paid overs..Peake could have done that and he's an absolute dud..Animal Enclosure wrote:It came down to Cale Hooker saying no to WC.

Paid overs is debatable. If you're a disciple of Terry Wallace & Damian Barrett then maybe you would think that.
Didn't say Pelican was anything more than a good operator. He's also 1.5 years into his plan to rebuild the club.

Had a shocking trade period this year....
I dont think it was shocking. Adelaide and Sydney were shocking, we were average.

Re: The Pelican
I'm happy to debate the pelicans worth but the majority of this site has over rated him..
he couldn't cover our most glaring need in a 3 week trade/free agency period..
My only real point is that he is nothing other than an employee trying to do his job...he is nothing special....
he doesn't have an x factor.....and we still don't have a Key Defender

Re: The Pelican
Pelchen didn't just need to get a key defender. He needs to get a gun key defender. Have a look at the key forwards that got away from us this year - Franklin, Riewoldt, Petrie, Tippett. Am I forgetting anyone? We basically need somebody capable of shutting down the best forwards in the game. People here talk as though it's as simple as finding a big guy to play defence.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

Yes, but another gun mid fielder would stop it getting in so easily in the first place.vacuous space wrote:Pelchen didn't just need to get a key defender. He needs to get a gun key defender. Re: The Pelican
Can you elaborate on the deal that Pelchen was unable to do that another, more capable 'employee' would have?
