James Gwilt
Am I way out of touch?
I thought from memory Gwilt was doing a great job down back before he did his knee, sure zac was there but he was inconsistant.
With a few games this year and a pre-season he will be good again.
I read some people talking about playing wilkes, many inconsistant forwards can become good backmen,i.e. Leppitch,Merritt.
We have probably the best one on one defensive coach in Max.

Re: James Gwilt
He's simply not tall enough to be a regular key defender. He's 188cm and has been forced to play on forwards and ruckmen more than 10cm taller than him, which results in a whole lot of free kicks against and shuts down his drive from defence.
I think he needs to trim down, get some athleticism back and focus on being a long-kicking rebounding half back rather than a gorilla-minder.

Re: James Gwilt
Just giving away too much height in some match ups, ends up giving away free kicks. not his fault. Could have a great season, but only if he does not have to play on 195cm+ types

Re: James Gwilt
Agree with everyone's comments, he really needs to be the guy playing on a second or third forward, and being used as third man up, and using his raking kicks. He's a strongly built guy but gives away too many frees to be a wrestling, one on one full back.

Re: James Gwilt
And according to Dennis adds some height.
One day it's all got to be worth it.

Re: James Gwilt
Most players......apart from Lenny ...require a year after comming back to hit their straps again.
Gwilt is ready to rock and roll again., but as a flanker and not key back.

Re: James Gwilt
Yeah rebound running defender who is adaptable but not tall enough for true KP. He's a big 188cm- thats a couple of cm taller than me and I've seen him up close and looks taller. His best footy is grabbing the loose ball and moving it forward with pace and long kicking.

Not bad at shrugging off any who'd stand in his waygringo wrote:Yeah rebound running defender who is adaptable but not tall enough for true KP. Bit of rugby maybe in his youth?
Re: James Gwilt
Unfortunately he'll be playing FB....
He played very well against Adelaide...
Looks heavy and a lot slower IMO

Re: James Gwilt
I don't think anyone will be the nominated FB I think it's more a case of matchups and Simpkin will probably get the bigger forwards or Fisher.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
Re: James Gwilt
I just love the way Gwilt seems to be able to grab the ball and kick it nicely to where its meant to go, all the while ignoring the skinny dweeb who's trying to apply forward pressure.
